“What happened?” I ask, waving to the yard.
“Dani says it’s a bet between Evie and the next-door neighbor. There’s something crazy every time we stop by.”
I still don’t know all of Dani’s former roommates that well. I’d been in the postseason when Miles and Dani’s romance took off, which means I didn’t get in on all the jokes Spencer and Jack did. At least Owen is in the same boat I am.
Miles disappears inside and I wait for a couple minutes. And then the impatience hits.
I practically run to the door and knock, hoping we can get going. We’re supposed to be at the restaurant in ten minutes and it’s going to take almost twenty to get there.
The door opens and instead of Dani and Miles, Kenzie is behind it.
“Why are you here?” she asks, studying me. And then her gaze moves behind me and her eyes go wide as she sees the blowups.
She waves me in and takes a step back. “Evie!” she calls up the stairs.
I’m not sure where to stand so I stay near the front door, hoping Miles will come down and save me.
A girl with short brown hair walks down the stairs. “I think I found one of your bars of chocolate, Kenz.” She’s waving an extra-large Hershey’s in the air.
I open my mouth to ask a question, but Kenzie speaks first. “Have you seen what the neighbor did now? The guy might break a hip trying to outdo you.”
Evie walks over and glances out the door, a soft laugh escaping her. In seconds, the sound is loud and deep, making me follow suit.
“Your neighbor does that?” I direct the question to Kenzie because Evie looks like she won’t be able to form a coherent sentence.
Kenzie folds her arms across her chest and gives me a curt nod. “They started this war a couple weeks ago. I’m not sure how the man does it because he’s got to be in his eighties.” She shakes her head and walks into the kitchen, pulling out a bag of popcorn. The smell reaches me quickly. It’s probably black in spots.
“Did you need something?” she asks, throwing the bag into the garbage can. She glances at me in between opening the package of a new bag of popcorn and placing it back into the microwave.
“Yeah, I came to find Miles. He said he was just dropping off the keys to Dani so we could go.”
“Good luck. Dani said she needed to show him something upstairs. I doubt they’ll be down soon. They’ve been taken by theBlack Hole.”
I’ve never heard that before, except for the small units on space throughout my public education. “The what?”
Kenzie is combing through the fridge now, pulling out packages and sniffing them before emptying them into the sink. I walk a few steps closer. Is she cleaning out the fridge while waiting for popcorn to cook?
“Sorry,” she says, spraying the contents down the disposal. “It’s something we used to joke about when my brother, Damian, got married. It’s like they have no concept of anyone else around them. Once the vows are said the PDA is through the roof.”
I’d never thought of it like that, but now that she’s talking about it, I see what she means. “How long are they usually in thisBlack Hole?”
“It ranges. Anywhere from three months to life.”
Laughing, I say, “That sounds a lot like a jail sentence.”
She shrugs. “Close enough.”
“Have you given some thought to the whole match film thing?”
She turns off the water and then grabs a towel, drying off her hands. After she’s folded it and set it back on the counter, she looks to me. If this is how thorough she is on regular things, I definitely hired the right woman to organize my place.
“The ref is still looking at the tape to see what the right call is.”
What is it about this woman that makes me want to stay a while? Not tonight, obviously, but she is quirky in the best way.
“So, you’re saying there’s a chance?” I say, grinning.
She raises an eyebrow. “You want me to be part of it that badly? We’ll be going on dates with other people.”
