The room goes still. I almost want to raise my hand out of pity, but I don’t know this poor woman.
“Fine.” She pouts and flicks the pom-pom on her Santa hat. “Everyone in favor of Claire Hawkins?”
A roar rips through the audience so loud I jump into Noa.
“We should go,” Noa says, grabbing my arm and tugging me toward the exit.
“Why? It just got good!” I say with a laugh. I’m enjoying this now.
“Everyone in favor of Noa Reid for reunion king?”
Noa freezes. I freeze too, but the uproar is enough to get my blood pumping again.
“Look at that. You’re king again.” I smile up at him, but he doesn’t return it.
“Get on up here Noa,” Cling Wrap Chelsea says. “Come get your queen.”
“Noa?” I say. “What’s wrong?”
He swallows. “That’s my ex.”
Chapter 12
Lennox
I’m pretty sure Noa is two seconds from passing out. After Cling Wrap Chelsea practically dragged him and his ex-girlfriend to the middle of the dance floor, she insisted they dance.
Who does that girl think she is? This isn’t high school, and for all she knows, they could be married to other people.
Wait.
No. I can’t do that. Noa never said he wanted to get back together with his ex, but what if he does?
His feet are barely skidding along the floor and he is looking anywhere but at the beautiful woman in his arms. He looks miserable.
He glances at me over Claire’s shoulder. I wish I knew him better to know if raised eyebrows meant get lost or save me now. I’m going to go out on a limb and go with the second one because he keeps fixing his collar like it’s choking him.
They’ve only been dancing for a minute, but neither of them has said a word to each other, and everyone is looking on and whispering.
Time to give them something more to whisper about.
I put one foot in front of the other until I’m less than a yard away from them.
Crap. I didn’t figure out what to say.
Claire sees me first and eyes me like I’m a pesky little fly.
Words. I need words.
“Lennox,” Noa says, sounding relieved. Gosh, I hope he’s relieved.
He drops his arms and strides over to me. “I missed my beautiful fiancé.”
“Excuse me?” Claire screeches and it’s like a mic drop in the room. All eyes are on us. “We just broke up four months ago.”
Noa reaches for my hand and I let him take it. “It doesn’t take long to find true love.”
Her eyes narrow to little slits. “Is that some sort of jab at me?”
