They had told her that the stranger’s name was Paul Hudson, and he lived in the city. He’d been caught stalking a local girl who had a restraining order against him. He had a record for breaking and entering as well. They were going to pick him up for questioning.

Once they were on the interstate, Elana finally started feeling her anxiety ease.

As they drove, Jack rested his head on Elana’s leg, refusing to leave her side.

CHAPTER27

They pulled into West Yellowstone, Montana after dark. The small but charming town was picturesque.

“Which campground are we staying at?” She looked over at her grandmother.

“We’re not staying at a campground tonight. I rented a proper cabin. I want to be fully rested before I see Ronald tomorrow.” She squinted at her phone. “Take a left on this street. It should take you right there.”

Elana wasn’t going to argue. She welcomed a proper bed and hot shower, along with a secure door to lock out the danger of the outside world.

She followed Grandma Cecilia’s directions. It was a line of cabins that backed along a dirt road.

“That’s it up ahead.” Her grandmother pointed. “The cabin with the blue door.”

Elana eased the van into the small parking spot in front of the charming cabin and killed the engine. “We need to get settled into the cabin, and I’ll start dinner.”

Grandma Cecilia shook her head. “No need. Takeout is on its way. I ordered it online when we rolled into town.” She gave a grin.

“That sounds perfect. I’m starving and in need of a hot shower. I want to wash this whole day away.”

Grandma Cecilia nodded. “You go on inside with the luggage. The password to the door lock is 1904.”

Elana frowned. “But I need to walk Jack first.”

Her grandmother shook her head. “I’ll walk him. You go inside and get settled. Take a shower and get comfortable. By the time you’re done, the food should be delivered.”

Elana knew she should argue, but she was tired, physically and mentally. Instead, she gave her grandmother a grateful look and got out of the van to gather their clothes.

With her arms full of their clothing, she climbed the steps to the log cabin.

There was an Adirondack chair by the door, so she carefully laid the clothes over it so she could unlock the door.

Elana punched in the code and tried the doorknob. The door opened.

Gathering up her clothes, she walked inside and left the door ajar so her grandmother and Jack could get inside.

Laying the clothes on the blue and green plaid couch she walked through the cabin, taking in each room.

There was a small kitchen off the living room and a half bath down a hallway. One bedroom was situated on the main floor and had a full bath. The second bedroom was on the second floor with its own bathroom as well.

There was even a small reading nook off the balcony.

Jogging back downstairs, she smiled when Grandma Cecilia and Jack walked through the door.

“How’s the cabin look, Elana?” her grandmother asked.

“Very cute. Two bedrooms. I can take the bedroom upstairs.”

Grandma Cecilia smiled and nodded her head. “Okay. Why don’t you go get a shower, and I’ll let you know when the food arrives?”

Elana nodded. “Sounds wonderful. I won’t be long.”

Her grandmother laughed. “Take your time.”
