Lucy frowned when she realized what her sister meant, then stood up and chucked the pillow at her.
Sadie ducked, but the pillow got her in the shoulder. It bounced off and landed in the gloopy mess of egg on the floor.
“Oh shit,” Sadie said, and Lucy gasped. “You gave me that pillow,” she said. “When you came back from your trip.”
“Oh… right,” Sadie said.
“Aren’t you upset? They came from a market in Istanbul.”
“Actually… they came from the airport.”
Lucy gasped. “What?”
“I forgot to get you a present until I was already on my way home!”
Lucy gaped at her sister. Then she twisted her mouth, trying to be mad, but fighting a suppressed laugh. Sadie was nothing if not clever.
“Anyway, you’re the one who threw it at me!” Sadie said, grinning. She went into the kitchen.
Lucy heard the water running and when Sadie came back with a handful of towels, both sisters kneeled on the rug and picked up the mess.
The horse woman whinnied again, and this time Lucy and Sadie looked at each other and burst into gales of laughter.
“I’m glad you came back,” Sadie said, when they calmed down enough to focus on the task at hand again. “I was so bummed when you left after the Blinky debacle. How long are you going to stay for?”
Lucy sat on her bottom, tossing her towel on the ground. “I’m not going back.”
“Why not?”
“Because he’ll be there.”
“Lucy, is this really just a guy you’re dating?”
Lucy leaned over again and focused on picking up the last of the eggshells, stuffing them into the carton. “Yes,” she said. She didn’t meet her sister’s eyes. “If you could even call it that.”
Sadie considered her for a moment. “Tell me about him.”
Lucy looked up, too quick. “Why?”
“Just so I know.”
Lucy stood up, carrying the egg carton back to the kitchen. “No.”
She could practically hear her sister rolling her eyes as she picked up the rest of the groceries and plopped them on the counter next to her. “Come on,” she said.
“No,” Lucy said, her voice hard. It was her best ‘don’t ask me again voice.’ It didn’t always work on Sadie, but she prayed this time it would. She didn’t trust herself to say the words without falling apart.
What is happening to me?
Sadie held her hands up for the second time that night. “Okay, fine. Let’s get some sleep. It’s late. Maybe you’ll feel up for talking tomorrow.”
Lucy smiled gratefully. Then she bunched her eyebrows together. “Hey Sadie?”
“Yeah?”
“What were you doing getting groceries in the middle of the night?”
“The party I was at was getting boring.”
