“I assume you must document rescues on the beach, right?”

“Of course. We’re required to make detailed reports.”

“Is there any way to compile copies of Nick’s reports?”

She pulls her mouth to the side again. “You want to show them to his parents,” she says matter-of-factly.

I nod.

“You sure that’s a good idea?”

I tilt my head. “Got any better ones?”

She grins. “Let’s go talk to Zane.”

I didn’t expectCallie to move so quickly on this mission for Nick, but I’m not complaining. Thankfully, I took the entire morning to spend at the meeting and to run some errands. I have a couple of onsite patient appointments scheduled today, but not until this afternoon. No Nick and Bandit session until tomorrow, which sends a surge of anticipation through me.

Although we didn’t get to really talk a lot on the beach—those adorable baby turtles kept us running most of the night—Nick and I connected on a deeper level. He’s so easy to talk to. Andhe makes me feel safe. Is there attraction between us? Definitely. But now…I feel like we’re growing closer.

Nick opened up more about his decision to leave law school and dealing with his parents’ disappointment, which made my heart ache for him. I’ve always had the full support of my mom and dad, even when I changed careers. So, if this could help the turtlesandNick by showing them what an amazing man their son is, then I’m willing to push a few boundaries.

Interestingly, I feel like I’ve gained another friend with Callie, which I’m sure will make Nick happy, seeing as how he and Zane are good friends. The thought makes me stop in my mental tracks. That’s a notion I can imagine having if I were Nick’s girlfriend. But I’m not. I’m not even sure he wants a girlfriend. However, I can’t help hoping he does, and that it will be me.

I file that away for later as we walk into what Callie calls lifeguard headquarters. You’d think that having a brother who’s a lifeguard would mean I’d get the inside scoop, but Graham joined the program just before I left for college. Plus, I spent all my free time at Liam’s pet shop, and I haven’t had a chance to ask for a tour since I moved back and started my business.

Except for Zane sitting at his desk, the place is empty. He stands with an ear-splitting grin when he sees us—namely Callie. And the kiss he gives her leaves no doubt about his happiness to see her.

With one arm still holding Callie against him, Zane bounces his gaze between us. “How was the meeting?”

Callie rests her hand on his chest. “Good, but we came to ask for your help.”

“Sure. Anything.” No hesitation, just ready to dive in and assist.

I tilt my head. “But we haven’t told you what it is yet.”

“So? Whatever it is, I’m sure there’s something I can do.” He really is just like his mother.

“It’s regarding Nick.” Callie gives him an implying look that includes me.

His brows go up.

I jump in. “Can you compile the reports of his rescues?”

He glances at Callie, who nods.

I can’t help but admire their ability to communicate without words. That ache I seem to feel around Nick hits me with a vengeance. I want that with him more than anything. Funny thing is, I don’t ever recall feeling that with Bryan.

Zane thinks for a moment. “I think I can compile something that will work without violating any privacy laws. Can you give me a day or two?”

A zing of excitement shoots through me. “Yes, thank you!”

“No problem. Anything for Nick.”

Callie stares at him as if she’s Lois Lane staring at her Superman. She swings her attention to me. “I knew he’d have an idea.”

Zane’s expression shifts to befuddlement. “I’ve been known to have them on occasion.”

Callie grins and shakes her head. “So modest.”
