. . .

“Tell me what’s up with you and Bobby and Shannon,” Wendy orders from her perch on my hotel room toilet lid as I finish getting ready for the rehearsal.

“Why are you here?” I ask. “Wouldn’t you rather be doing more interesting things with your new husband?”

“Oh, we took care of those interests, believe you me.” She gives me a giant smile and doesn’t show even a hint of a blush. Modesty is not Wendy’s style. “And now I want to hear about your men and if there’s any potential of you doing interesting things with either of them.”

I pretend to look for something in my toiletry bag. “I don’t have any men.”

“Both of those guys looked like they wanted to pee a circle around you back at Leslie’s parents’ house. I’d say you have men.”

I give her a side eye. “That’s disgusting.”

She shrugs. “It’s the truth. It appears we have a love triangle on our hands.” She rubs her hands together. “And I do enjoy a good love triangle.”

“There are no triangles.” I roll my eyes at her as I put on a pair of dangly silver earrings. “No squares. Not even any straight lines.”

“You’re lying. You shared a hotel room with Bobby. Whathappened? Did you see him without his shirt on? I bet he looks goooood without a shirt.”

Based on the feel of him through all his layers, I bet he does, too. “We were both fully clothed the entire time.”

“That’s unfortunate.”

I can’t help but chuckle at her response because she’s not completely wrong.

“There’s something you’re not telling me,” Wendy says. “You might as well go ahead and spill it, because you know from experience that I’m only going to keep asking.” She holds a hand up before I can even think about responding. “Understand I don’t want you to tell me any secrets he might have told you, and somehow I think he did. I just want to know why there’s a tiny little smile on your face every time you look at him.”

My eyes widen.

“You didn’t realize that, did you?” she asks.

I shake my head as I feel my face heat.

“So tell me what happened.”

I turn and lean against the counter. “When the power went out, it got really cold, really fast. And … um, well, we …”

She pokes me in the knee. “You what?”

“We slept in the same bed,” I blurt out. “But only to keep each other warm!”

Wendy cackles. “I knew it! Did he spoon you? Was he the big spoon? Was it everything you ever imagined it would be like to have those big, strong, California-tanned arms wrapped around you?”

“I have never imagined what it would be like to have his arms around me,” I lie.

“I don’t believe that for a second, because evenIwondered that when I first met the man, even though I already had my sights set on Randall. But it was fantastic, wasn’t it? Don’t lie to me again, Melissa Teague. I have to live vicariously through you now that I’m forever attached to the love of my life.”

I close my eyes and sigh. “He didn’t spoon me, but he did wrap his arm around me and hold me against him all night, and it felt good. Really good. And not just because he kept me warm.”

“Yessssss.” Wendy leaps up and throws her arms around me. “My baby girl is growing up and falling in love.”

I try to shove her off me, but she’s clinging like a monkey. “I am not. Shut up.”

“Don’t tell me to shut up. I’m so happy for you! And for Bobby. He’s a lucky man.”

“There’s nothing going on between us, Wendy. Nothing.”
