Wendy giggles. “He’s our chaperone.”

“He’s a pretty good one. I’m not about to do anything inappropriate with him watching. Now, if you don’t get off me—and particularly if you don’t stop pressing your elbow into my gut—you’re going to have to change your sheets.”

“Why?” When I don’t answer, she says, “Oh. Little boys’ room. Got it.” She rolls off me again.

While I’m in the bathroom, I change back into my clothes and brush my teeth, so I can kiss her before I leave. As soon as I open the door, Wendy darts in.

“You woke up fast,” I state.

“Want to kiss you before you go,” she says as she loads toothpaste onto her toothbrush.

I lean against the doorframe and watch her brush her teeth.

“You’re so weird,” she says after she rinses her mouth.

I cross my arms over my chest. “Why do you say that?”

“Because you watched me brush my teeth like a psycho, like you did in the mirror last night.”

“I didn’t realize that was one of the hallmarks of a psychopath.”

“It’s the main one.” She tugs my arms down and then reaches up to my neck to pull my head down to hers. “Now kiss me.”

“She finally let you stay the night again, huh?” Ash says as he stands in our kitchen eating a bowl of cereal.

“Yup.”

“That’s all I get?”

I stick a piece of bread in the toaster. “Yup.”

“No other details you’d like to share?”

“We slept. End of story.”

“Gotcha. That’s a big step, though.”

“Yup.”

He rinses his bowl and spoon and loads them in the dishwasher. “As much as I’ve enjoyed this scintillating conversation, I need to get to work. See you tonight?”

“Maybe.” I’m hoping not, because that will likely mean I’m with Wendy again.

“All righty then.” Ash shrugs. “I guess I’ll see you sometime.”

I watch him leave while wondering why I wouldn’t talk to him. I honestly have no idea, unless it’s because I’m tired from lack of sleep. No point worrying about it, though. Ash won’t be offended that I wasn’t talkative.

A couple minutes later, the intercom by the front door buzzes, startling me so much I drop my freshly buttered toast. I pick it up, blow on it, and take a bite while I cross to the door and press the button to talk to the doorman. “What’s up, Jeff?”

“Wendy O’Halloran is here for you.”

My eyebrows raise. “Send her up.”

I open the door and stand in the doorway with an eye on the elevator at the end of the hall, munching on my toast while praying Wendy’s here for a good reason and isn’t having some sort of crisis. The elevator doors finally open, revealing an absolute vision in a green skirt suit. Wendy’s mouth curves into a smile when she spots me, and she rushes down the hall without ever taking her eyes off mine.

“Everything okay?” I ask when she approaches.
