“It’s not nonsense, and I recall you kissing me about ten seconds ago.”
“Cheek kisses don’t count,” she declares.
“No?”
“No. Or nose kisses or forehead kisses or palm kisses.”
“Or top-of-the-head kisses,” I add.
“Neck kisses?” she asks hopefully.
“Definitely not. That’s like second base—maybe third.”
“Nope, it’s only first-and-a-half. But I do love a good necking session.” She shudders in my arms, and my resolve wavers precariously.
“No.” I shake my head firmly. “No necking. And I didn’t know anyone actually said that word outside of movies set in the 50s.”
“I say it. If I can’t kiss your neck, can I lick it?”
It takes every bit of my strength to set her down on her feet to get her tongue away from the vicinity of my neck.
“I think maybe you’re an evil witch,” I say as I take her hand in mine. “Or a vampire, considering your neck fetish. Are you a vampire?”
“You tell me.” She bares her teeth at me and hisses.
“Do vampires hiss? I don’t think they hiss.”
“Shut up and take me on a date.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She cocks an eyebrow at me. “You like me telling you what to do?”
“It’s oddly exciting.” Yet I hated it when Colleen ordered me around.
“Good to know. I’m storing that little nugget of info away for future reference.” She licks her lips, and I can’t tell if she did it on purpose or not.
I pull her toward the door and try not to think about what she intends to order me to do in the future. “I’m starving. Let’s get out of here.”
“Hold up,” she says. “I need to grab my purse.”
“No, you don’t. I’m paying.”
Wendy yanks her hand out of mine and plants both hands on her waist. “I’m perfectly capable of paying for my own meal.”
I hold my hands up. “I didn’t say you weren’t. I only said I’d pay.”
“If you do, then I’m paying next time.”
“We’ll see.” I don’t intend to let her pay for anything ever.
She steps right up to me and shakes her finger in my face. “We will not see. We’ll take turns paying on our dates. This is the 80s, and I’m a modern woman. I can afford to pay, and I will. Got it?”
I grab her hand and kiss the tip of her finger. “Got it.”
“Finger kissing is okay?”
“Yes, but no finger licking.”
