“Yes, alpha…now.”

CHAPTER43

KAZIMIR

“Well, this is fucking brilliant.” Caustic—that’s my tone and my general feeling about this new development. What kind of freak show is this?

“What?” Ethan asks, keeping his eyes on the road like a responsible motorist.

When I don’t answer, he glances over at me and my massive erection that’s currently attempting to tear the seams on my pants or possibly build its own circus tent.

Ethan’s eyes widen, but then he directs his gaze back to the highway. A subtle blush infuses his cheeks. “Were you thinking naughty thoughts?”

“No!” I bellow. “I was sitting here, minding my own business, and this little fucker jumped to attention.”

His blush deepens and his focus on the road seems even more deliberate. “That’s anything but alittlefucker. If you weren’t aroused, then…”

Ethan’s abrupt silence meets mine as the same theory reaches us both, but our responses are worlds apart. He blurts a laugh and winces from the pain, but even that doesn’t stop the hearty chortling filling the enclosed space.

“Ethan, this isn’t funny.”

He snorts, clearly unable and unwilling to muffle his excessive glee at my predicament. “I’m sorry,” he murmurs, “but really, it’s funny.”

“It’s notfunny!”

Ethan’s refusal to take this seriously is entirely offensive, but mostly because his mirth is forcing a window in my dark soul to open. A fresh breeze glides inside, bringing light and a hint of spring that’s never existed within me. I can’t embrace it—it’s too dangerous.

“Look,” I start again, “think of this from a tactical standpoint. This…” I gesture accusingly at my crotch. “… would distract me if I needed to use my weapons.”

The guffawing continues. “Thatisa freaking weapon, dude. It’s huge. Do you have a knot? Have you checked?”

The heat in my face is completely unrelated to the temperature in the vehicle and is as surprising as my suddenly saluting cock. Am I blushing? Assassinsdon’tblush—there must be a law.

“Ethan, I need you to take this seriously.”

Are youseriouslykidding me right now? That’s the thought he sends my way, commandeering our connection to deliver an undiluted dose of happiness right into my veins.

I almost answer in my thoughts—Ialmostreveal the truth of our connection. Ethan assumes he can’t hear me because he’s a beta, not that I’m killing myself to conceal from him the reality of who I am.

“Ethan,” I scold, “just tell me you understand how flawed this system is.”

“Yes,alpha.Whatever you say,alpha.”

He’ssassingme—I’ve never beensassed. What is happening? I’m a killer, a monster… I’m not a man yousass.

As though he caught my inner verbal rampage, Ethan sends me another silent message.I trust you, alpha. I know you’ll never intentionally hurt me. I’m willing to believe you’ll never hurt Tillie. So, no, I’m not going to stop laughing at your tactically inconvenient boner. And I still want to know whether knots are real… and if you have one.

“No, not yet, but they’re real,” I grudgingly respond, before another idea occurs to me. I don’t reach inside him for an answer, preferring to do this more carefully. “Tell me what you think this means.”

His smile becomes sweeter, gentler, a smile that will forever belong to his first love. “It means she’s okay. It means they found a way to connect. Gideon wouldn’t force her, so they’ve either bonded or they’re close to it. Once they’ve bonded…” He swallows back a strange mash of reassurance and guilt. “… I don’t have to fear the storm carrying her away anymore. Gideon will know better than I ever did how to be what she needs.”

“She needs you.”

“Yes, just like I need her and also…” When he casts his gaze my way again, a shyness appears. “…you.”

An asteroid might as well have crashed through the roof, pulverizing my body—that’s the weight that lands on me from the generosity of this man’s faith.

“Ethan, I’m not…”
