“You’re going to defy all the odds and find his address.”
“What if this is him winning again?” I ask. “What if his whole plan is to send me on a wild goose chase, flying around the country looking for him, knowing that I won’t be able to find him?”
“Oh, you’ll win this one,” she says. “He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with.”
“We already flew all the way to San Diego and we’re not any closer to finding him,” I remind her. “What if I can’t find him?”
“Then you’ll win anyway, because you get to go on an adventure. With me,” she adds with a wink. I roll my eyes. “Just because we didn’t find him here doesn’t mean I’m giving up. We’re going to find him, Gnome.”

REVENGE ON THE WHALES
It’s still dark outside when the plane touches down in Miami. I must have dozed off for a couple of hours because the flight home seems much shorter. Anne is still asleep, so I nudge her shoulder. She jolts awake, then uses her wrist to wipe a drop of drool off the corner of her mouth.
“We landed,” I tell her.
We’re at the back of the plane again, so we have to wait for everyone else to deboard before it’s our turn.
“We should take another trip next weekend,” Anne suggests as we make our way to her car. “Where else did Luca live?”
“I’m supposed to go on a date with Jake next weekend,” I remind her.
“Who?”
“Jake.”
She shoots a weird look in my direction like she doesn’t understand who I’m talking about.
“Husky Eyes,” I say. She smirks, and I realize that she made me say that just to mess with me. I roll my eyes.
“Maybe you can go out with him during the week,” she says. “You don’t want to wait too long to write back to Luca.”
“He waited two years to write back to me. Besides, I don’t want to change my date with Jake again. I’m looking forward to going out with him.”
“Maybe there’s someplace closer than San Diego,” she suggests. “Did Luca ever get stationed in Florida while he was in the military?”
“No, but he was stationed in Georgia for a while.”
“Let’s fly to Georgia then. Next weekend. You can have your date Friday, then fly out Saturday morning. We’ll be back the same day.”
“You’re serious about this whole adventure thing, aren’t you?”
“I clearly have nothing better to do.”
“You need to get laid.”
She sighs. “You’re probably right.”
“Maybe I can find out if he has a cute friend I can set you up with.”
We reach her car, and she smiles at me over the roof. “See? This is why I keep you around, Gnome.”
“Don’t call me that,” I say, but she’s already inside the car with the door closed.
She drives me home with the radio turned up. I’m hungry, but also ready to go to bed by the time she pulls the car up to the curb in front of my building.
“Oh boy,” she says. “He runs. And look at that body.”
