The sound of movement pulled us back to the present. Dean groaned as he shifted slightly.
"Is he in pain?" But Harrison shook his head.
Then something I remembered Flynn telling me popped into my mind.
"Did he hurt a human?" I asked, needing to know the Keepers had a reason to want to end his life. It wasn't something I could believe Dean was capable of.
"No. He attacked a Keeper."
Flynn said they killed rogues who didn't obey the laws, one of which was killing or attacking a human.
"Is that why he will be killed?"
Harrison looked at me for a few silent moments. "Yes."
I didn't like the heaviness I felt in the pit of my stomach when I imagined Dean taking his last breath. We had never been close but I would feel grief at his passing. It was the reason I was going to take the risk to get him out.
Another groan stopped any further thought. Dean's eyes opened and I held my breath slightly as they found mine. There was no recognition in his eyes. It was like he didn't remember me. Or maybe his lack of remembering was a ploy not to give away my true identity.
The sound of the door opening and the rushed figure of Hayden stopped any further conversation. I hid my injured hand behind my back without thinking about it.
"I need to speak with you," Hayden said to Harrison.
"I'll be back in a moment," Harrison told me.
When I glanced at Dean, he was wide-eyed but still on the bed.
"He's too weak to do you any harm," Harrison said, thinking I still feared him. "I will only be a few minutes."
I gave him a nod. I was feeling relieved that I was going to get a chance to talk to Dean.
I waited patiently for the door to close before I turned to look at Dean. His hand shifted slightly. Before I took a step toward him, my eyes scanned the room for visible cameras. There was nothing. But that didn't mean there weren't cameras hidden, making them difficult to detect.
"Dean," I whispered, hoping the Keepers didn't have hearing like we did.
He briefly closed his eyes in acknowledgment.
"I won't leave you." He opened his eyes briefly again, then closed them tightly.
I still had no way of knowing if the stuff they were telling me about Dean was true. It was hard to believe he would attack without being provoked.
I believed in good and evil. In the same way I believed some Keepers were evil. Just thinking of Travis made me feel a shiver of fear run down my back. Then there were good Keepers, like Harrison. It wasn't to say I didn't believe Flynn was good, because I did. He was just so driven to his cause that nothing else mattered. What kind of a life was that?
"Hang in there for me," I said softly, needing him to hold on until I could put a plan into action to rescue both of us. This time he blinked twice.
The door opened. We had run out of time.
"I need to leave," Harrison said. I nodded and hurried to follow him out. He locked the door.
There was no sign of Hayden when I followed Harrison down the hall. Just before he opened the door to the study, I stopped him.
"Have they found Flynn?"
"He has been taken by a pack of werewolves," was his solemn reply.
There was only one pack of werewolves on the territory. Kyle's pack. The Midnight pack.
