I locked the front door after Paulina left, and although this was my down time—when Conor was still asleep and all the customers were gone, I decided to get started on baking tarts for tomorrow. Anything to keep busy and not think about the fact that my little boy was not asleep in his room.

And this way when Conor got home this evening, I would be done with baking and could enjoy my time with him.

Okay, fine. My time with Adam, too.

I let out a little squeak when I felt someone’s hand on my ass after I took a pan from the oven and placed it on the stovetop.

“That’s a good way to get hit with a hot baking pan,” I chided.

He continued to caress the curve of my ass.

“It might be worth it.”

I turned to give him a small peck on the cheek.

“How’d it go at the station?”

“Good. I am officially an employee of the Haven Springs Police Department. I could start tomorrow if Maisy has my uniforms ready.”

“Do you want to start tomorrow?”

“Not even a little. I need to get my South Carolina driver’s license and see about getting my Bronco insured and registered here. And, if I have time, maybe look at a few rentals.”

Oh, right. Because he’s not living with me permanently.

I tried to keep my voice upbeat.

“Well, I don’t think you have to worry. Maisy isn’t known for her speed.”

“You know, I got that impression. I feel like the town’s alterations revolve around Maisy time.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Yep. Although Angus keeps threatening to buy the police uniforms online and have Mrs. Ramirez make the alterations.”

“I imagine that would cause quite the uproar.”

“You would be correct. But it works, because every time he threatens it, she straightens up. For at least a month or two.”

“Well, he didn’t come out and say it today, but he let his irritation be known when she repeated the gossip about you and me. Although, kudos to her for saying it to my face.”

“I’m not surprised. She’s in Granny O’Brien’s bridge club. I’m sure you and I have been the talk of their games since you arrived.”

Adam threw his fist in the air. “Yes! I knew it! A second after meeting her, I knew she had to be friends with Granny.”

He gripped my ass over my jeans with both hands and pulled me flush against him.

“What do you say we go upstairs and give them something to talk about? I believe I owe you a ride.”

“That’s right, you do.”

“Face or cock, your choice.”

I reached between us to stroke his erection over his shorts.

“Gosh, so many choices. How’s a girl supposed to decide?”

“I mean, technically, you can have both. But you’re the one who said it had to be quick—and quiet.”
