He clambered over Kai’s thighs, wrapping his arms around Kai’s neck and burying his face in his smoky skin. Sascha lowered onto his cock, Kai’s precum easing the way.

It was still a tight fit, but that didn’t matter. Because as soon as they were joined, it was like pure magic. The jittering energy that had invaded Sascha’s body faded, and all that was left was Kai.

Kai.

Sascha could feel him. Kai’s soul, it must have been. A solid, warm weight in Sascha’s chest that screamedsafety.

“Your soul is lovely,” Sascha whispered against Kai’s neck.

He leaned back. Kai was grinning as wide as Sascha had ever seen. “And yours is perfect,” he told Sascha. “But I already knew.”

Sascha highly doubted that. He was pretty sure his soul was worn and ragged, bruised all over by proximity to violence and a lack of care. But maybe it was perfect for Kai. Maybe his soul felt just as comforting in Kai’s chest as Kai’s did in his.

“You still like the taste of it?” he asked anyway.

Kai stroked Sascha’s cheek. “My precious mate. I’m going to take such good care of you.”

Sascha smiled, tucking his head back against Kai’s neck. Mates. They were mated.

Their consummation was slow and sweet. Kai lifted and lowered Sascha over his cock almost leisurely. He kept murmuring all the while, about all the ways he was going to ensure Sascha remained certain of his choice.

He didn’t have to, not really. The feel of Kai’s soul was confirmation enough. It felt right, like it had always belonged there. Like Sascha had been incomplete before, walking around without that reassuring presence.

See? He’d known he was codependent.

Sascha’s orgasm built with a sure, steady pressure, and he came with a sigh, Kai following close behind.

Afterward, Kai lifted them both from the floor with ease, keeping Sascha in his hold. “Now I will bathe you,” he told Sascha. “A tub is not a river in the demon realm, but it will have to do.”

Kai

Kai was slow to rise.

After he’d bathed Sascha, cleansing him of any lingering evidence of their consummation, the new bond had taken it out of them both. Kai had slept more than he was used to needing, wrapped tightly around his mate.

Now his mate was wrapped around him, with his lovely face pressed into Kai’s chest.

Which was all well and good, but Kai had a horrid crick in his neck. He tried to stretch it out but got caught halfway through the motion.

He tried once more before realizing what the issue was.

His horn point was lodged into the wall.

Cursed human bedrooms with their cursed human-sized furniture.

Kai tugged himself free with effort and scooted lower on the bed, until his feet were dangling off the end. It wasn’t ideal, but it was better than having a horn trapped in plaster.

The movement had Sascha turning in his hold with a sigh, his back now to Kai’s chest. He grabbed Kai’s arm and wrapped it tightly around his middle, forcing Kai onto his side. “Wull haff one custom-made,” he slurred before closing his eyes again.

Kai tucked his face against Sascha’s hair, smiling into it. His sweet, perfect mate. Kai could feel him, secure within his chest.

What he’d been able to feel before had been just a piece. A mere morsel. Now Kai wasfilledwith Sascha, the weight of him settling Kai’s own restless soul for the first time in…perhaps ever. It was like he’d spent his long life only partially tethered to his own existence, and now here he was, fully secured. He’d never known anything like it.

Even after having found Sascha, after knowing he wanted to bond with the human, Kai had still been…antsy. Anxious for the bonding ceremony to take place, haunted by that one last incomplete step. What if they didn’t bond in time? What if he was forced away?

But now it was done. Their souls were linked, inextricably. Now Kai could just…be.
