“Sure. You need anything?”
“Nope,” I answered a little robotically and then forced myself to look at him.
Confusion swam in the depths of his tawny eyes.
And that right there told me all I needed to know. His innocent, honest words were shared with no idea of how they’d impact me. The concern was for my reaction, me closing down, and that was all on me.
I managed a smile, trying to make it as sincere as possible. “Thanks for tonight. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Before he could respond, I left the sitting room, making my way to the bedroom. Each step I took, the ache in my heart became more pronounced.
Things had to change. I needed to try to let go. It was the only way our friendship—and my heart—could survive.
