Confessing in therapy had helped a little, and since it was confidential, I knew there was no way my confession was going to appear on the final record of my commitment. Yet somehow that didn’t make me feel better.

As I walked up to the clubhouse, I heard raised voices, and I sighed heavily.

Why had I ever resented the quiet? Talk about not appreciating what you’ve got!

I hurried my steps, pushing open the door. At first, I was ecstatic to see Kitty behind the bar, and then my eyes narrowed when I noticed who was propping up one of the seats.

Vicky.

“Everything okay here?” I asked, immediately walking over to Mama. I looked down at her and she nodded slightly.

“Ahh, here she is. My replacement!”

“Let’s not start, Vicky. I’ve been nothing but nice to you, but you’re trying my patience.”

“Am I? Because I’m only asking a question. How does it feel to know I came first? That—”

“You were never first. You were the rebound. I was the original, and you were the pit of despair Dante buried himself in whilst I was away. One look at me, and he was jumping back into the light.”

“Cute. Did you know he—”

“Are we about to argue over a man?” I scoffed. “How very… feminist of us. I’ll pass, but thanks.”

“You’re feeling pretty good about yourself right now, aren’t you?”

“Every damned day, sweetheart.”

She breathed a silent laugh out of her nose, and then raked her eyes up and down me. For a second, it looked as though she was going to continue the disagreement. I raised a single eyebrow in a challenge, and after a sneer from her, she turned around.

It seemed as though she was going to leave, but at the last second, she turned back around and smirked at Kitty.

“It’s nice to see you out of bed, Mama. Old Crash wouldn’t want his little old lady rotting away now, would he?”

“You can leave now,” I said, stepping slightly in front of Kitty, as though my mere presence could protect her from the evil words Vicky was intent on throwing at her.

“Oh, I will. But before I leave, I just wanted to say how much I miss Crash. He was always so good to me. So, so good,” she closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. “One of the best, in fact.”

Kitty pushed her way back in front of me. “Crash wouldn’t have gone near you.”

“Oh, but he did. Many, many times,” her grin was pure evil. She stepped closer to us again so she could lower her voice, making sure we were the only ones who heard her words. “He’d compliment me so many times. He’d lose his mind when inside me, telling me how he loved the feeling of my pussy gripping him.” Kitty whimpered at my side, and a strange feeling of protectiveness came over me. “I knew I wasn’t the only person he was cheating on you with, but I was the one he came to the most often. He had such a way with his fingers. The way he—”

Her words were cut off because I finally had enough. I moved too fast for her to see me coming, grabbing hold of her face on either side and delivering a forceful headbutt, sending her straight on her ass. Her nose instantly poured with blood, but it didn’t hold me back. My leg swung, my foot catching her under her nose and up her face, breaking her nose for sure.

“Let’s get a few things straight,” I said to her, positioning my foot on her neck, pinning her to the floor. “Crash may have fucked you. He may even have liked it. That’s not news to us. After all, most bikers and their old ladies always have a code: What happens on the road, stays on the road. But you were nothing more than a whore to be used as and when he pleased. There was no fucking respect for you.”

I pressed my foot down further, making her eyes widen with fear as she began to choke. “Kitty was the woman he chose to be by his side. Kitty was the woman he wanted as the mother of his children. It was Kitty that he trusted to help run the club as his official old lady.”

“Rachel—” Jenna began, but I was too far gone to listen to reason. Vicky’s hands clawed at my ankle, trying to remove me from her neck, and it just enraged me even further.

“Kitty was the one he chose. Not you. You might have been given the odd cream pie, but Kitty was given the keys to the whole goddamn fucking empire. You don’t even compare. You were hidden in the shadows, and she was paraded around and treated like a fucking queen. You think you achieved somethingby coming in here and throwing around the fact that you knew what Crash’s dick tasted like? All you’ve done is made yourself look like a desperate, nasty, vindictive little bitch.” I pressed down once more, forcing a gag from her throat, and then I relented, stepping away from her.

“But do you know what’s the most stupid thing you’ve done? You’ve made an enemy out of me, and all the other old ladies here. Because we know what you did, Vicky. We know what your family did. There are ladies here whose old men are in hospital because ofyouractions. And that was a really, really dumb fucking move.”

Vicky scrambled backwards, drawing in huge gulps of breaths. I took my place back by Kitty’s side and linked my arm with hers. Jenna came forward, linking Kitty’s other arm, and one by one, all the old ladies joined us. We formed a semi-circle around Vicky, becoming an impenetrable force, a united front, the ultimate show of solidarity.

We were the old ladies of the Devil’s Disciples, and that fuckingmeantsomething.

“Your position of old lady means nothing. None of this fucking means anything. My family were protecting me and—” Vicky sneered.
