"So what does she need to do?" Alpha demanded gruffly.
"Just what she's doing. Luna, his body will probably start shaking here in a minute, but keep your hand on him. Every time you let go, the curse will sink back into him."
"I'll hold on. I won't let go," she vowed, her wet eyes locked on Landry's flinching face.
The other alphas suddenly burst into the training center, tripping over each other in their haste to reach luna's side and shouting at Alpha Wyatt and the rest of us for letting her get involved. Luna dropped her mate's hand to put her other fingers on Landry, and Alpha Wyatt stood up to continue arguing with his brothers.
My boys and I traded glances, worried about Landry, but also knowing how volatile our alphas could be when they were all upset. The last thing anyone needed was for a fight to break out here and now.
Betas Crew and Matthew showed up with their two mates, shortly followed by the Maxwell twins with theirs. The witches and Angelo made a circle around Landry and the luna, and I was pretty sure it was to keep the alphas from interfering until it was done.
The betas and the twins kept an eye on the five brothers, ready to intervene if it looked like things were headed toward a throw down, and me and my boys watched Landry.
The longer the luna held her fingers to his chest, the darker and fuller the veins became under his skin. She looked lost in her own world, clearly concentrating on her task, and I for one was so proud to have a luna like her for our pack.
The Goddess blessed us, I linked my boys, and they all nodded, catching on immediately to what I meant.
"Now, luna," Sara said, "I believe the vein-like things will begin to rupture soon. When that happens, there will be a quiet noise, then a small puff of air and a vile smell. Can you continue through that until they all rupture?"
"Rupture means pop?"
"Yes, luna."
"I can continue. I won't let him down. I won't fail."
"I know you won't," Sara assured her with a gentle smile.
"Wait! Won't it get into her?" Alpha Cole shouted in a panic. "When they rupture, won't the curse latch onto her?"
"No, alpha," the witches all said at once, then Maria went on to explain, "It's a once and done spell targeted to one specific person. As soon as it leaves his body, it's neutralized."
After that, the alphas watched in utter silence, so many emotions swirling in their eyes that I had to stop looking at them. Finally, the first vein blew exactly as Sara described, and a whiff of evil hit our noses.
"Nasty shit," Tristan whispered, and we all nodded, waving our hands under our noses.
Five minutes passed as vein after vein burst, each one sending a foul odor into the air, until nothing was left except for the bruise. Despite being so much closer to the horrible stench than the rest of us, the luna held on, true to her word, until the dark circle faded to red, then pink, then nothing.
Oak?I called. You there?
Tired, Rube.
You can sleep in a minute. How are you feeling otherwise?
Good. Healthy. Happy. Light and free.Oak sighed. It was heavy, Rube. So heavy.
Rest now, friend. We'll talk later.
I shared that conversation with the others, and the witches all nodded.
"I bet itwasheavy, carrying a revolting curse like that one." Beatrix scowled and her hair began to rise on an invisible wave of heat. "I wish I had that little slut here! Too bad you killed her, alphas. I would have liked to purify the evil from her, and nothing purifies so well as fire."
"Our little pyro." Zayne draped his arms across her shoulders while Zayden did the same around her waist. "Such a bloodthirsty girl."
"You love it and you know it," she snorted, but I noticed she calmed down and it didn't feel like an oven door had opened behind me anymore.
Watching Landry's face, I saw the lines of pain had disappeared, although the dark shadows persisted under his eyes, and he seemed to be sleeping peacefully.
In unison, the witches hunkered down and raised their hands above him for a second, then nodded at each other.
