"I'm fine. And you ran instead of drove because?"

Wyatt rolled his eyes at me.

"You can ask that after being cooped up all day at that dumb reception?"

Slinging an arm around his neck, I pulled him in for a noogie.

"Hey! My hair!"

"Oh, the photos are over and it's pitch dark out. No one can see your perfectly coiffed fluff," I teased him.

As he wrestled around, trying to get out of my hold, I linked Cole.

Do you remember when our dads first started that alpha training school? They gave us an assignment to make a plan that would have saved Dark Woods.

Yeah, I remember. He sent me a confused look.

What did you do with your plan?

Huh? Oh. Well, I was pretty proud of it.He smirked a little.I mean, for a thirteen-year-old, it wasn't bad. I revised it as the alphas suggested, then filed it in my dad's office under A.

A? Why A?I let Wyatt go as I wondered about the organization of Dad's filing system.

A for Assignment. It's probably still there. He tilted his head. Why?

No reason. Just wondered.

What did you do with yours?he asked.

Threw it away.

What?! It was so good! Alpha Jay said it would have saved Dark Woods!

My father had nothing but bad things to say about it. Why would I keep it?I shrugged.Anyway, that's what he wanted to show me. He fished it out of the trash that night and had it framed. It's in his office. What do you think that means?

I think,Cole said slowly,it means he messed up, knows he messed up, and would do anything to fix what he messed up.

I nodded, jiggling my keys in my pocket. I wasn't going to forgive my father, at least not any time soon, but I wasn't going to waste another minute grieving for our broken relationship or invest another erg of energy into hating him.

For now, I decided, I would pretend he was an acquaintance and treat him as such until I could process everything I was feeling.

"Mase?"

"Pile in the truck, boys," I said when Jay's voice penetrated my thoughts. "Let's go home."

"Home to our bed," Ash said on a mighty yawn.

"Home to a shower," Cole grumbled.

"Home to a snack," Wyatt said.

"Home toour mate," Jay corrected them all.

"Our heart and soul," I agreed.

"Yes," my brothers all said at once, and our smiles were bright ones.
