“Right.” I loaded the launcher with the last explosive round. “Going for broke,” I muttered.

“Copy that, Red Queen.”

“Fire in the hole,” I warned and launched the explosive cannister to the far end of the hall which was lengthy enough that I was willing to risk it.

The cannister clattered, I felt like the universe held its collective breath with me, and the explosion went off, rocking the end of the hall, the blast blowing out the side of the house, plaster dust and whatever else rolling past my alcove while my ears ringed fiercely.

“Check mate?” I asked.

“Certainly, check. Advance, Red Queen – but remain cautious.”

I shouldered my rifle and worried I was getting low; I hadn’t been keeping count, and I’d traded quite a bit of fire with these gits at the end of the hall.

A muzzle flash, low, a round whizzed past me, I aimed and popped off, just as I reached the set of doors, a masculine voice grunted and groaned and I watched the figure slump and go still.

“Check mate,” I muttered.

“You may have won the battle…”

“Yeah, yeah, still at war.”

I hauled back and kicked open the doors to the room that held Kaijin, our black queen, and Kyle, my black king and I took aim.

“Your left!” Kyle called out, and I turned and click!

“Oh, ho, ho!” Kaijin laughed at me, I looped the rifle off over my head and threw it at her to buy myself time. She snarled and leaped before I could clear the Beretta Cheetah from its holster.

I blocked, as best I could but she was both taller and stronger than me and we both went crashing to the floor.

Both Lach and Roan’s voices clashed in my ears at once, but I was focused on the bitch that was grappling with me. She went for an elbow drop, I dodged and flipped her, I got a couple of good shots in and snatched the fucking wig off her head in the process, pissed that we were in an epic cat fight for the ages.

“I’m going to make it so every time you look in the mirror, every time they look at you, you all think of me!” she snarled, and I grinned savagely.

“Good idea!” I spat, and I brought my forehead crashing down into the bridge of her perfect nose. I felt that sucker crunch and she cried out, angry and reversed hold on me. We rolled across the floor, both struggling to get our hands on the other’s throat and neither of us succeeding. Finally, with a rage-filled cry, her head darted forward.

I jerked my head to the side and narrowly missed her sinking her teeth into my goddamn cheek, what she did manage was to sink teeth into my shoulder where it met the side of my neck and that bitchsank teeth. I screamed, equal parts rage and pain as she clamped down and tried her damnedest to make her fucking teeth meet in the middle, through my fucking flesh.

I let her go in a desperate grab for the knife in my boot and I got it, and without thinking, in a miasma of rage and pain, with no real aim, I stabbed at her. Over and over, at least three or four good shots to the flank, her mouth opening in a scream as she rolled off of me and away, putting distance between me and the knife. I sniffed, eyes watering, and stood at the ready.

I was between her and Kyle, thankfully, as she clutched her side, glaring at me.

I heard the roar of multiple shotgun blasts.

“Sadie!” Roan bellowed from downstairs. Kaijin grinned, my blood coating her whore mouth, making it a feral thing, and she ducked out the door, running flat out down the hall in the direction I’d blown up.

I took off after her, ditching the knife in favor of the Cheetah.

She leaped out the bloody blasted hole in the end of the hall and I wasn’t about to go after her, but you’d better believe I wanted that bitch dead.

That was twice she got away.

I turned, Roan was moving up the hall like a thunderhead, big automatic shotgun in a forward grip.

“Watch our six,” I demanded and went in to free Kyle from whatever X shaped contraption she had him chained to.

“Good job, baby,” he praised. “Get me off of this thing.”

“Working on it,” I grunted. “I sure hope I got that bitches’ kidney.”
