Realizing what was happening, I signaled for Rowdy to follow the women downstairs and act as my advocate.

Left behind in the living room, I found myself facing off against the “grownups” of the family.Oh, and Pax was in the mix, too.

Meeting Clint’s parentsfelt terrifying. Yet, I had no time to flip out over the stress. As soon as we arrived, I was ushered downstairs by Elle, Sabrina, and a woman whose name I don’t remember.

“I’m Moe,” the blonde said as soon as we stepped into the sleekly finished basement. “Sabrina’s kinda like my bitch. Welcome to the family.”

Sabrina snorted nearby in the kitchenette area where she knelt to pet an orange-and-white cat. Rowdy walked downstairs after the others and sized up the women. He didn’t speak while Elle used her hip to move Moe away from me.

Once we had a little space from the others, Elle stared into my eyes and smiled. “How was your first night with my brother?”

“Clint sat on Sutter’s bed until I went to sleep in your bed. He’s been very protective.”

“Is he getting on your nerves yet?”

“No.”

Elle smiled wider. “He will. Clint is controlling. But not in an obvious way. He maneuvers people.”

Thinking back to how Clint kept me focused on what he thought would help me, I said with more edge, “He’s protective.”

Elle nodded. “Chill, itsy-bitsy spider. Don’t need to bite me for stating the obvious that a club president is a controlling bastard. But I get why you want to feel protected. Clint is one of my best friends because he wraps up his people in his armor and keeps us safe.”

Feeling nervous like my reaction was the wrong one, I backed away. Elle instantly erased the space I created.

“You’re getting everything twisted,” Elle insisted while resting her hands on my shoulders to keep me still. “I figured my brother might be making a bad impression on you. Like, he might be too controlling or needy or horny. I wasn’t sure how Clint might act since I’ve never seen him this way before. I planned to give you a pep talk about patience and how he’d mellow out with time. So, I’m glad you aren’t annoyed by him.”

“Oh,” I said and smiled before freezing at the sight of Sabrina sauntering in my direction.

“I’m sick of being cooperative,” she told Elle. “This chick seems plenty strong enough to put up with my bullshit.”

Moe snickered at Sabrina’s announcement and looked out the sliding doors leading to the yard. Elle shoved her cousin aside and smiled at me.

“Did you see how tall Sutter Cane is?” Elle asked me while Sabrina glanced at Moe and rolled her eyes.
