What the fuck?

Essy grins when she sees me, her eyes lighting up, but the woman beside her has caught my attention.

“Hey, stranger,” Essy says, and I swallow hard.

“Angel,” I mutter and walk over, catching my mother’s attention, whose eyes light up.

“Sweetheart, this is a surprise,” she says, and I hum and reply, “Yes, it is.”

I lock eyes with my girl, who tilts her head, frowning. “Is everything okay?” she asks.

I nod but don’t answer verbally, my head coming up with different scenarios that I will blame Bethany for, and I ask my mama, “What are you doing here, mama?”

She gives me a funny look like I’ve just asked her a stupid question, and I begin to relax until she states, “I’ve come to check on Esmerelda,” and all my hopes diminish.

Fuck, was she using me?

Chapter 16

Esmerelda

IfrownatDamian, who, if I didn’t know any better, looks ready to blow up. His cheeks have gone red, his hands are fisted at his sides, and anger radiates from him.

Five months in a relationship, you pick up these traits, and right now, I don’t think he has any right to feel angry, not that I even know what he’s angry about.

He’s part of the Black Angel’s and he never told me.

Is it a lie or an omission of the truth?

You know what? I don’t care. She’s his mom, Honey, who is also with a biker. Damian, her son, is a biker, which explains the angel wings on the tank of his bike and he kept that part of his life from me when he knows me inside and out.

He did not bring it up once, and I haven’t met his parents. Never did he bring them up, for five months, not once.

Is this why?

“How do you two know each other?” Honey asks with confusion, looking between us, clearly noticing something off, and Damian’s jaw locks while I narrow my eyes at him and his weird behavior.

“She’s my girl mama, has been for five months,” he admits, which looks like reluctantly and hurt hits me.

Ouch Damian.

I look towards Honey as she squeals and bounces on her feet, and I can’t help but smile at her reaction despite the hurt my boyfriend has just caused me. She says, “Oh my god, that is amazing!”

I chuckle and grab the three boxes of baked goods I’ve just boxed, ranging from cakes to cookies and danishes, before placing them on the counter and saying, “I’ve put an extra two cinnamon rolls in for Acid and Slick, Honey.”

She nods, her eyes sparkling with happiness, and I have to admit it feels good to know she approves of me. I was starting to worry Damian was embarrassed by me, though considering he’s just told her about us, I’m kind of thinking maybe he is…

“You know Acid and Slick?!” Damian demands, and I raise a brow at his tone. His demeanor doesn’t change, so I say, “Not personally. They come in from time to time. This is a bakery, Damian.”

His jaw ticks again at my snarky tone before he asks, “How long have you and Mama known each other?”

I furrow my brows at his coldness, something I’ve never received from him before, and I don’t like it. If anything, it makes me want to smack his face until he lightens up again to that fun, kind, and loving person I’ve come to fall in love with.

Honey answers him, “I think you were sixteen when we first met, wasn’t it?”

I hum, not taking my eyes off my boyfriend, and state, “It was the day I got accepted on the summer course in Europe before Mom found out she was pregnant with Aiden.”

Damian softens a little, showing me my boyfriend again, knowing how much I regret going on that course, missing out on precious time with my mom, but he soon reverts into the jackass and tenses when his mom says, “She was so proud that you got in that course sweetheart, don’t regret it, embrace all that you’ve learned for her legacy in this shop,” and I nod as she looks at her son, “I’ve been popping in to check on Esmerelda a couple of times a year since she lost her mom. I definitely approve son,” and I know my cheeks are heating with a blush while my boyfriend scowls…
