“But I haven’t sung the ABCs!” she protested.

I motioned for her to hurry up. “You could have sung the ABCs multiple times by now. Come on, we don’t want to waste water.”

Alice huffed, shutting off the water and bumping into me as she passed by. She flung herself onto her bed, pouting some more as if my request for her to get some sleep was a major affront. It was already past nine.

I winced just thinking about waking her up in the morning. She’d be a grumpy bear, and I’d have to deal with it.

I’d rather deal with a bastion of ex-Marines on a warfront than deal with a sleepy Alice.

“Good night, sweetheart.” I kissed the top of her head and adjusted the comforter. She was very particular about it covering up to her chin.

I headed downstairs and grabbed a beer from the fridge when my phone buzzed in my pocket.

Sebastian

Sure.

I reread the text a couple of times.

Beck

Wait. Seriously?

Sebastian

Is that a real question?

Beck

I was half assuming you’d say no. I figured you’d be too busy with Faith to get away.

Sebastian

Are you trying to uninvite me now?

Beck

I would never.

Sebastian

What time should I come over?

Beck

Now work?

Sebastian

Yes. I’ll be over soon.

Less than two minutes later, my phone alerted me that someone was at the door.

Maybe it’s Luna.I picked up the pace, only to be sorely disappointed to find my best friend on my stoop.

Sebastian frowned. “You asked me to come over and you give me that sour puss look? What the fuck man?”

I shook my head. “Sorry. It’s just that I thought it might be—” I shut my mouth. “Never mind. I just figured it was too fast for you to get here, so I thought it might have been someone else.”
