“I know exactly what it means because I’ve been there. You don’t have to ever be alone again.”
Axe came walking over to us. “Chief says you can go in and grab your things. Can we get you another room to stay in?”
I shook my head. “No. She’ll stay with me. We can’t have this happening again.”
Lily hugged me. “Thank you. I’ll pack my stuff.”
She got up and Axe followed behind her. I walked over to find Chief leaning against the wall, smoking.
“Those things will kill you, Chief.”
He chuckled. “Yeah, yeah. So will my wife but fuck it, right?”
I laughed and leaned against the wall next to him.
“So what are you thinking?”
“Honest? Somebody is just trying to scare her. My money is on your crazy ex there. Anybody who’s close to you she seems to think is corrupt and plotting to harm her.”
I shook my head. “That fucking crazy bitch.”
“You took the words right out of my mouth, Moose. Just keep an eye on your woman and I’ll have my guys keep an eye out too.”
“She’s not my woman.”
Chief laughed. “You got fucking jokes tonight, Moose. Going toe to toe with Hayes says otherwise.” He threw his cigarette on the ground and stepped on it. “Claim her and tell Hayes to get fucked. That prick has it coming.”
I threw my head back and laughed.
“You really don’t like him, huh?”
“Between you and me? Fuck him. I’m building a case to fire him, but keep that under wraps.”
I nodded. “Got it. I better go check on Lily. Thanks, Chief.”
Walking over, Lily and Axe were packing her car full of her things.
“Need more room?”
She smiled when she looked up at me. “Nah, this will be fine. Maybe if I ever find a place to live, I’ll be able to buy real plates and cups. But for now, this will do.”
“Alright, babe. You good to drive?”
She nodded. “Yeah, I’m good. To your house?”
“Picking the kids up first, then home.” I turned to Axe and patted him on the back. “Thanks, man. Appreciate your help tonight.”
“Anytime, brother. See you later, Lily.”
He walked over to his bike and started it up, driving out of the lot. Lily and I got in our cars and headed toward Sav and Hawk’s house. I parked right by the stairs and Lily parked behind me.
Taking her hand in mine, we headed up the steps, and I let myself in the house. Laughter and music filled the apartment. We moved into the living to see Sav and the prospect dancing with the kids while Hawk sat on the couch laughing.
Hawk looked up and winked at me.
“Welcome to the party.”
I laughed and pulled Nova into my arms.
