I bet she’s fucking wild…
But I pushed those thoughts away. I didn’t need a woman to complicate my life. I had my kids; I had Hawk and Sav, and most of all I had The Devil’s Highwaymen at my back.
Chapter Seven
Lily
Myhandswereshakingas I got back to my hotel. What the fuck was I doing?
I parked my car and hopped out, heading to my room. As I opened the front door, I kicked my shoes off and went straight for the bottle of wine.
I let my client touch me. And I wanted more!
I popped the cork off and took a huge sip before laying back on my bed. Moose was a great dad. He was every woman's dream man. But he was not mine.
Moose was my client. My fucking client. And I could lose everything by stepping over that line. I no longer took risks like that and played it safe instead.
Anyway, he was just playing games with me. I wasn’t his type, and he had made that very clear. And it was a good thing; because I didn’t want him.
Despite the way he made me feel, the feelings he stirred deep inside of me, the way he made my body heat up. I did not want him.
My phone rang, and I looked down to see an unknown number. I took another sip of wine before answering it.
“Attorney Banks. How can I help you?”
“Hello, beautiful.”
I sat there in silence before I recognized the voice; my ex fiance.
“Dexter.”
“I miss you so much, Lily. Come home now.’
I barked out a laugh. “No way. I’m good right where I am.”
“Lily, dear. You can’t possibly be good in that rundown town. I heard you’re doing pro bono work for women. That’s not paying your bills.”
“No, but it’s making a difference in their lives. Not everything is about money, Dexter.”
He sighed. “But it is, isn’t it? I heard you were on retainer for a gang now. I guess you really can’t escape your roots, huh?”
“They’re a riding club and good people, Dex. You don’t know them. If you have nothing else to say, this conversation is over.”
Dexter laughed. “This is long from over. I want you back home. Come on, Lily dear.”
“No. We are over. This is over. Goodbye.”
I hung up and laid back down, taking another sip of wine. Dexter thought he was better than everybody else. It was a major factor in why I broke off the engagement to move here.
My phone rang again, and I picked it up without looking at who was calling, knowing it was Dexter again.
“Jesus Christ, Dex. Leave me the fuck alone! I do not want you back and I can do this on my own!”
“Uhm… it’s Moose. I was just checking to make sure you made it back safe. Everything okay, princess?”
I sighed and ripped out my elastic, letting my hair fall down.
“Shit, I’m so sorry. Everything is fine, just dealing with my ex. Same old fucking argument.” I got up and poured myself a glass of wine before putting the bottle away. “Anyway, I’m fine. I’m home safe. Thank you.”
