Liv had spent most of her day staring at the little red dots on the computer screen, watching their every move, and checking if any more of the trackers had been removed. They hadn’t been so far.

She had spent some time showing Rome and Antoni how she would be able to control the cars from her computer, and Antoni shook his head in amazement the whole time.

“You gotta teach me to do that,” he said quietly once she had finished.

Rome rolled her eyes, “you can barely send an email.”

“Excuse me, ma’am,” he snapped affectionately. “First of all, how dare you? Second of all, I know my way around a computer.”

“Really? You really believe that you could do all this,” Rome gestured towards Livie’s screen.

“When Liv teaches me, yes.”

Rome shook her head and laughed at him, patting him condescendingly on the shoulder, “okay, baby. If you say so.”

Antoni narrowed his eyes at the back of her head as she continued to laugh while she walked away.

“They’re moving,” Livie said quietly.

All of a sudden, and everybody in the house stopped moving and fell silent.

A few beats as we watched Liv, her eyes scanning the screen.

“They’re moving!” she said again, slamming her laptop shut and standing up.

“All right, everyone,” Toni boomed. “Remember what we’ve planned. Take out the bikes, stay as far away as you can from the cars.”

The Family filed out of the house quickly, everyone jumping into cars and tucking guns into their holsters. Antoni kissed Rome by the front door, before hopping into their separate cars.

Livie followed Rome, laptop in hand.

I noticed that she had left her backpack behind, and I grabbed her by the wrist as she headed towards Rome’s car.

“Wait,” I said.

She looked up at me, waiting.

I couldn’t pick the words that I wanted to say, they were all floating through my mind at once.

How did I know that I was going to see her again?

How could I pick just one thing to say?

“Look after yourself,” was all I could manage.

She nodded once, and slid her arm out of my hold.

Our hands lingered for a second, still touching as her eyes fell to the ground.

I sighed, and headed for my car.

“Sam,” she said, and I turned around.

She stood with a simple smile on her face and nodded once.

I shook my head and shrugged, “another day at the office.”

Liv rolled her eyes and hopped into the passenger seat of Rome’s car and set up her laptop on the dash. I took a deep breath and followed Toni out of the driveway and onto the road.
