I moved my hand and so did he when we pulled onto the street.

When the workshop came into view, I put my hand over my mouth and Sammy slammed on the brakes and stopped the car in the middle of the road.

All of the boys were standing out on the street.

Danny’s shirt was in tatters on the pavement in front of him.

Sam threw the car in park and sat back in his seat, raking his hands through his hair before punching at the steering wheel.

I looked up at him, and then back to the flames rising from the remains of the shop.

Chapter 22

Sammy

Seven years.

Seven years of work went up in flames before my eyes.

The traffic behind me honked, but then went around.

The last thing I cared about was the fact I was blocking traffic. The smoke bellowed up and curled into the sky, and people from the surrounding buildings were now making their way out onto the street to see the commotion.

I felt Liv’s hand fall onto my arm, which dragged me back into the present moment. I looked over at her, and she searched my face for whatever she was looking for.

“Come on, Sam,” she said softly.

I nodded once, and pulled my car forward.

When I hopped out, Toni ran his fingers through his hair as he walked towards us.

“What happened?” I said, crossing my arms.

“We have no idea,” Antoni shrugged. “We were all sitting down, Zeke got up to get more food and then we smelled the smoke. It started near the office, and it just caught. It spread so quickly.”

I nodded and looked up towards the sky, now black from the fumes of burning metal and oil - and disassociated.

“Redliners?” I asked.

“I have to assume so,” Toni sighed, clapping me on the shoulder. “Don’t worry, Sam. We’ll get em.”

“The weapons?”

“Stashed in our cars. They were already packed and we managed to get all our cars and bags away before they caught.”

I nodded again.

Toni lingered awkwardly, not knowing what to say, before he finally walked away towards the boys. All I could do was stare straight ahead as everything I had worked for turned to ash and rust.

The metal walls were curling under the heat, and I could smell the faint scent of burning tyres - a scent that was usually something that I enjoyed.

“Come on, Sammy,” Liv said quietly, taking me by the arm. “Let’s get out of here. Toni can handle it.”

I nodded once and followed her back to my car, except she slid into the drivers seat. I would have argued about her driving my car, but I couldn’t bring myself to bother. I could feel her glancing over at me every few seconds as she drove, watching me carefully as if I were about to break.

“I’ll check my computer when we park,” she said softly. “Maybe they found a tracker or something, I don’t know.”
