I rolled my eyes.
Of course I knew who he was, but I wasn’t going to give some no-rank member of the Redline Angels any reason to puff up his ego. Merrick was one of the founding members, and it was the only reason I knew who he was.
They had grown so quickly, that it was now impossible to keep up with every member. They all swayed on the younger side, which was one of their major flaws - they were all arrogant, and fearless.
They had no caution, no worries.
Which was why they had failed to take us down yet.
“What are you and this little bitch up to? Your brother send you here to spy?” he grabbed Livie by the arm and dragged her towards him. “I’ll get it out of her, that’s for sure,” he said, dragging her towards the door of the pub.
I sighed, shaking my head as I pulled out the gun from my waistband, cocked it and shot him. Once in the stomach, once to the chest.
He groaned, and fell to the ground with a grumble. Livie put a hand to her lips and stared at the now dead man on the floor in front of her.
“Come on,” I said through gritted teeth, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her towards the car. I heard Zeke start it up, the rumble echoing through the street as he sped closer to us, pulling up onto the gutter. I pushed her into the backseat and hopped in after her just as the front door to the pub opened, and the mass of people rushed out.
“Go!” I yelled at Zeke and he flicked the car around, sending a cloud of tyre smoke behind us as he sped off in the other direction.
“Where are we going?” Zeke asked, speeding and curving through the streets.
“Just fucking drive,” I spat, “we need to hide the car.”
“To the shop?”
“No!”
“What about Sean’s?”
I looked at Livie next to me on the backseat as she gripped her backpack tightly. Her eyes stared straight ahead and the shock on her face had disappeared. It was a blank expression that was impossible to read.
Sean owned the wreckers where we got a lot of our decoys from, and he was a part of The Family, though he was just as unknown as I was. I was surprised that Merrick even knew who I was in the first place.
It set off alarm bells, knowing that like us, they must have been doing their research.
“Sean’s will do,” I nodded, “but take the long way. Make sure no one is following.”
I looked behind us, and though there was no one there, we could still hear the faint rumble of motorcycles in the distance.
Zeke pushed the car faster, through the winding back roads and suburban streets.
“He knew who you were, Sam. What if they come for us now?” Livie spoke for the first time.
I smiled at her and shook my head, “the only person who saw us is dead.”
“Surely, they’ll know that it was The Family.”
I shrugged, “we’re not their only enemies.”
I was trying to be calm for the sake of Livie and the boys, but I was concerned too. No one else had seen us, but it was possible that they had seen Livie’s car. It was also possible that they would just assume it was us, given the tense situation at the moment. I tried to push those thoughts away, and deal with what was happening in the present moment. Everything else could be dealt with later.
We drove around for a while, making sure that no one was following us, before we pulled up in front of Sean & Son Wreckers.
The gates were locked, and I got out, picking the deadbolt holding the chain gate shut. It popped open and I slid the gate open wide and Zeke drove in, around the back of the shed behind a pile of crushed cars.
I closed the gate, locking it again and I walked towards the office. The door was unlocked and I went inside, and Sean already had his gun drawn, pointing it at my face.
“Hey Sean,” I sighed, wiping my boots on the mat.
