I sighed, standing up and grabbing my backpack.

“Call me when you have news?” I asked quietly to Rome as I headed for the front door.

She nodded once, “you want a lift home?”

I shook my head.

She frowned at me and pursed her lips but nodded anyway.

I walked most of the way home, but eventually hopped onto a tram because it happened to be there and shortened the trip. I stared straight ahead the whole way as the carriage rocked and hummed through the city.

I got home and flopped onto my bed face first, letting out a deep exhale. I flipped over and stared at the ceiling, but the mental images of the explosion, and the sound still was so fresh in my mind.

I didn’t know when I had fallen asleep, or for how long it had been, when my phone rang, waking me up. I answered it straight away, sitting up and putting it to my ear.

“Rome?” I said.

“Not quite,” Sam chuckled through the speaker.

“Oh,” I stuttered, “you’re awake.”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“Thought you were dead.”

He chuckled again, “can’t get rid of me that easily.”

I let out a sigh of relief.

“Thank you, for today. For the last few weeks.”

“Any news on King?”

“Not yet.”

“So, is everything fixed now. Is everything resolved with the Redliners?”

He sighed through the phone, “for now. Hopefully. If King’s not dead, we at least sent them a pretty strong message and drastically reduced their numbers today. I think Toni has even called Val already.”

“So I guess we’re done then.” I said, surprised at the disappointment in my voice.

I should have been glad.

Now I could stay away from him, and everything could go back to normal.

“I guess so,” he said slowly.

“Well, it’s been fun.”

He chuckled again, “that’s one word for it.”

“I’ll see you around, I guess.”

“Wait-” he said.

I waited, there was silence.
