Chapter 1
Livie
My finger hovered over the accept call button for only a few seconds before I thought better, and hit decline. The Grand Hall was loud and buzzing with energy; it was stuffed with people shouting their conversations so they would be heard over the music.
All of the noise mixing together was almost overwhelming.
My phone started to ring again and I sighed, putting it face down on the table in front of me.
“Are you going to sulk in the corner all night?” Rome smiled as she plonked down in the chair next to me.
Rome was the only bride I had ever known to wear a black gown, but at the same time, I couldn’t imagine her in anything else - and she was gorgeous, as always. She fidgeted with the tight straps around her shoulders, making a face at the thin fabric that had marked her skin. My bridesmaid’s dress was an exact copy of hers, only in a champagne colour instead, so I felt the pain she was feeling from the restrictive material.
Of course, in our line of work we were used to wearing much less clothing, and these elegant dresses had us all feeling like we were playing dress-up.
“I’m not sulking,” I laughed and showed her my phone screen filled with missed call notifications.
Her eyebrows drew together in a frown as she snatched it from my hand.
“Sierra?” she asked, scrolling through the texts she had also sent.
“She’s mad that she wasn’t invited.”
“As if she would expect to be,” Rome scoffed, placing my phone back down.
I nodded, and forced a small smile.
“Hey,” Rome said, grabbing my hand and giving it a small squeeze, “I know you miss her.”
“I shouldn’t though,” I sighed, raking my hands through my hair, “she’s the one who ruined everything.”
Rome nodded, “but still. I know it must be hard. It’s always hard to lose a friend, no matter the cause.”
Sierra was once my best friend in the world, we had been through everything together.
All of us were a team, we were Lilith’s Daughters.
Our line of work and our pasts brought us together to form a collection of once broken women who had made ourselves strong.
We weren’t just friends. We were sisters.
We had each other’s back, we were ride or die.
Until Sierra’s greed nearly got us all killed.
Trust was the most important thing to us, with what we did for a living, we needed that. We needed to know that we would do anything to protect one another. I had put my life in the hands of these women without hesitation so many times before, now it was hard.
Trust. Loyalty. Survival.
That was our code.
Sierra had acted the opposite.
It had been over a year since the incident, and I had mostly managed to move on. It wasn’t until Sierra somehow heard about Rome’s wedding to Antoni Santino that she had been trying to contact us.
For whatever reason, she wanted back into our lives.
