As far as I know, my parents had no problems getting pregnant and when I left, my eldest sister who has the same parents as I have had just given birth to a son.I haven’t been in touch with any of them since then and I have no idea about anyone else in the family.Pregnancies weren’t really discussed in my family pack, not until we could celebrate the birth of a new baby.

“Okay.Thank you. That’s all I need from you.”Sophia reads the screen again, her face falling.“Mathew, this was your first heat in a decade?”

“Yes.”He tightens his arms around me slightly, his voice quiet as he nuzzles the side of my head, like he’s trying to hide behind me.

“Do you know why you’ve not had a heat in that long?”She waits, her fingers hovering over the keyboard.

“Trauma, according to the professionals I’ve spoken to.There doesn’t seem to be a physical reason for it.I also don’t have strong pheromones. Will that be a problem during the pregnancy?”His last words are without much energy.

“It’s not ideal, as pheromones are important for communication. But as long as you can sense your Alpha’s pheromones, it shouldn’t be a problem. For a pregnant Omega, their pack’s pheromones are really important, both for mental and emotional stability and for the health of the baby.”

He lets out a nervous laugh.“I can smell other people’s pheromones just fine. It’s just my own that are a problem.”

“Then it should be fine.”She eyes us.“Vera, do you get enough of Mathew’s pheromones? This might affect you more than him.Other Omega pheromones won’t influence the pregnancy as much as Alpha pheromones do, but seeing as you two seem to be pretty strongly bonded, it’s important you still get enough of them. Are you able to do that?”

I nod, hiding my face in Mathew’s neck, not just to smell his pheromones but also because my cheeks are heating up.With how often we make out and have sex, I get plenty of his pheromones.

Mathew lets out a soft laugh.“I’ll make sure of that.”They flare and then I feel his dick against my thigh.

Damn, that guy!Somehow he can get horny when we’re at the fucking doctor!

“Well, then.I think that’s all for today.Do you have any more questions?”

I look around, and I think we’re all ready to get out of here as soon as possible. We’ve got good news, news that we’ve been hoping for for weeks, and now I’d love to get out of this place.

Instead of going home,Derrick drops us off at a cute cafe, after Jorge gave him the address. It’s in a building that’s made to look like a cottage, only much bigger so that it can actually fit the cafe inside.

The tables and chairs look right out of a painting, their wood well polished and well taken care of.There are chequered cloths on the tables and each one has a small vase with spring flowers in them. It’s like walking into a fairy tale setting, one that ends well and not in death and destruction.

Okay, maybe that’s just my bias since my parents used to read me the ‘original’ versions of the stories, not the Grimm or Disney ones. The original versions are a lot scarier and tend to have a much different moral to them than the ones most people are familiar with.

But the vibe of this cafe is very different from the really fancy and expensive restaurant that Mathew first brought us to, the one where we first met Riley. That restaurant is all overwhelming wealth and opulence, this cafe is cottage-core and ‘back to hand-milking the cows times’.We’ve been to the restaurant and other places in the last couple of weeks, but that has always been some level of stressful, this is the first time that I step inside and feel relaxed.

“I thought we should go out to eat somewhere to celebrate the good news.”Jorge walks to a table at the back of the cafe, which is right in front of large windows that look out over a grass field and there’s even a lake in the distance.

This place really is right out of a painting or picture book and now I wish I had a change of clothes so I could wear something cute instead of jeans and a simple shirt because that was the most practical for the hospital visit.

We all sit down and a waitress comes over, handing us the menus.Everything on it looks good.I don’t know what I feel like having, but I’m really hungry now I’m no longer so nervous.

The waitress takes our drink orders, so we can take our time deciding what we want to eat.

“Can I have some mint tea?”I think that’s the best way to get started.I don’t think that my stomach will thank me if I have something stronger just yet.

“For me too.Thanks.”Mathew slides his arm around my waist, leans his head on my shoulder and closes his eyes.“I think I could fall asleep here right now.”

I reach up, sliding my fingers over his cheek and jaw.“Feel free. It’s not like we’ve got anything else important to do today.”He’s not the only one who’s exhausted, but I’m still too wound up to even think of falling asleep.

Mathew entwines our fingers, putting our hands into my lap.“I don’t know if sleeping here would be such a smart idea.I don’t want to make a fool of myself by falling off the chair.”

Riley, who’s sitting across from him, smiles.“Well, it’s not like a lot of people would see it, this place is basically deserted.”

“True.”He laughs quietly and his weight on my shoulder increases as he relaxes.“And I’m pretty sure my mates would protect my honour, right?”

“Of course.”I turn my head slightly so my lips are against his hair.“If anyone dares to laugh, I’ll make sure it’s the last thing they ever do.”My tone is half joking and half serious, but the way his pheromones flare and he licks his lips, he likes the idea a lot.

“Okay, no talk of ‘taking people out’ or anything like that while we’re here.”Jorge raises his voice enough that we can all hear him but the staff can’t.“We’re here to celebrate new life.So no gloomy topics.”

“I guess that means no talk about work either?”Riley bumps her shoulder into his, grinning.
