My body still hadn’t calmed. I pushed up with my palms planted on either side of her. “I have to do a lot of paperwork. I have to fill out more than one incident report. I’m going to have to talk to the sheriff.”
She bit her lip. “I don’t want to push you. I don’t, but are you okay? Really?”
“Yeah. Yeah. I’m good.” I moved to the side of the bed. “I’m going to get in the shower and then call and see how Gabe is doing.”
She sat forward, letting the sheet fall to the side of her hips. I smirked at the tiny hickey on the inside of her upper thigh. I believed I had given her that when we were in the shower. I had been so hellbent on sex since last night we had forgone condoms. I was being reckless. We hadn’t talked about it.
“Breakfast after, though?” I asked, hopping to my feet. “You want some breakfast?”
I marched to the bathroom.
“Caleb, wait. I think we should talk about a few things.”
I hovered in the doorway. “Yeah, sure. Let me shower and see if I have another bandage for my face. Then food. I know you’re starving too. You never turn down bacon.”
She smiled. “No, I don’t.”
“Okay. Give me a few minutes.” I closed the door and turned on the shower.

I stared at the bathroom door from across the room. The shower was running, and Caleb had promised breakfast afterward. But I didn’t like that I didn’t know what was going on. What was worse was that I didn’t know what had happened to him yesterday or last night. I didn’t know how Gabe had been hurt. I still didn’t know how Caleb had received a massive gash across his cheek.
And he wouldn’t talk to me about it.
I climbed out of bed and pulled open one of his dresser drawers for a T-shirt and then stepped into a pair of his boxers. I had learned a technique to fasten them tighter to my hips, so they at least didn’t hit the floor.
I picked up my phone to check for new messages. There was a text from Josie checking in. And one from Ethan. Shit.
I looked over my shoulder at the bathroom. I needed to tell Caleb Ethan was still in town, but we had a lot of other things to talk about. None of them seemed as important as what he was experiencing. It could wait. Everything could wait.
The shower water stopped. I tiptoed closer and pressed my ear to the door.
“Knock, knock. Can I get a few minutes in there?” I asked.
The door whipped open. Caleb smiled. “Yes, of course.” He had wrapped a towel around his waist. “Sorry. I should have let you come in here first.”
“It’s okay. You’re distracted.” I scooted past him and let myself in to use the bathroom, wash my face, and brush my teeth.
When I emerged, Caleb was dressed in one of his Coast Guard T-shirts and a pair of shorts, not the uniform I expected to see him in.
“I thought you had to go into work for official reports.”
“I do, but we can get breakfast first. It will be fine. Guthrie told me to take my time this morning. That’s what I’m doing.”
I eyed him. “Okay, but all I have are the clothes I had on last night. Could we stop by the cottage so I can change?”
Caleb grabbed his keys. “Let’s head to the Blue Heron.”
I looked down at the boxers. “Can I walk out there like this?”
He laughed. “Of course. Shows off your legs.” He pinched my ass.
I collected the clothes we had strewn around the room last night and my phone. I followed Caleb to his truck and we drove to the Blue Heron. I spotted John at the end of the pier in his usual fishing spot.
“Do you want to wait for me or come in?”
