“I think so,” she responded softly. “Can you explain it again?”
I smiled as he broke it down in simpler terms, giving her age appropriate examples.
“Can I get a deer tattoo when I’m older? That way I can be the best lawyer.”
“You want to be a lawyer?” I asked, earning her presence in front of me. “When did you decide that?”
She tapped her chin.
“After I saw auntie Jaslyn on TV last week.”
Mmm.
Not only had her last case in the District Attorney’s office been a serial rapist, but it was indeed connected to Caden.
What they hadn’t revealed was the potential partner the man convicted might’ve been working with. There wasn’t enough evidence at the time to go, but after Demetrius handed Caden over and we provided the evidence everything began to add up.
He’d been doing this for a long time.
Nathaniel hadn’t lied. He fed his craving in other ways and so many women suffered because of it.
I’d made the decision to let his name and crimes become national news. Every publication you could think of was writing a story on him and the trial since he’d arrogantly decided to plead not guilty.
Eventually after multiple attempts on his life inside, he changed his tune and pled to all charges with no deal on the table.
His sentencing was in five months, but he wouldn’t make it to see the day.
“Is it okay for me to be a lawyer?” she asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
I nodded.
“You can be whatever your heart desires and I’ll support you.”
She took off, yelling she wanted to tell her sister the news.
“All finished,” my grandda said, wiping my back down before allowing me to stand.
I walked to the full-length mirror and turned, glancing back at myself.
After nine years of only an outline, it was finished.
“Thank you,” I said, meeting my grandda’s gaze. “For making me wait. For letting me experience life without the weight of what this means on my back.”
I understood what he’d been trying to convey back then. He hadn’t decided to finish it later because he wanted to pay me back for my bravery at thirteen.
He waited because he wanted me to be ready to take on the role as head of this family, fully. Completely without qualms.
“You understand now?”
I nodded.
“I understand.”
My grandda stood and walked over to me, dragging me into a tight embrace.
“Your grandmother would be proud, little deer.”
The amusement in his tone made me chuckle.
