She huffed a sound, maybe a laugh. Who knew at that point.

“Yo!” A call came from upstairs, and all my pleasure vanished into the cool night air.

“What the fuck?” I held Addi to me, ensuring she couldn’t be seen, but she was already leaning forward, grasping for the towels we’d thrown to the side.

We wouldn’t have been interrupted if it wasn’t important.

Briggs stepped out onto our private balcony. “I know you’re done, and I’m not looking, but we gotta problem.”

“What?”

I was already moving, climbing out of the hot tub and holding out my hand to Addi. She must have sensed the tenseness in Briggs’ voice because she was moving too, one leg straddling the edge before she pulled herself out.

“Get inside. Now. I can’t get a hold of Cort and Lincoln.”

“What the hell?” Addi asked, hurrying toward the door and wrapping her towel around her. I wrapped mine around my waist, scanning the deck and beyond, but all I saw were black outlines of trees and lights from the stars and moon.

Fuck. What had I missed when we were fucking?

“What’s going on?” she asked, and there was that tight, high-pitched worried tone to her voice. Now wasn’t the time to panic.

“Let’s get inside and upstairs. Get dressed. Dry clothes. Running shoes.”

“Okay. All right.” She was already breathless, but she listened, running up the stairs two at a time as we got inside.

We passed Mason and Briggs hauling their asses back downstairs. Wherever they’d gone when we went out to the deck, I had been thankful at the time, but now I wished I never would have kicked them out. Briggs had his laptop tucked under his arm, two guns strapped to his hips, and I was certain he’d have another at his ankle. He sat down at his tech station and clicked buttons, bringing all screens to life.

“I’ll be back to help when I get clothes on,” I told him, but his head was already bent.

“No worries. I had some feeds up on the screens when I was up there, but I can rewind these in case I missed something when I was flipping through.”

Mason stopped beneath us on the stairs, and I gave Addi a gentle shove up them. “Keep moving, honey. I’ll be right there, but remember what I said.”

“Clothes and shoes.”

Her face had lost its red, heated hue and was now the color of snow, and I hated that we kept doing that to her, but this couldn’t be helped. Briggs wouldn’t have yelled for me if it wasn’t serious and if he hadn’t truly lost them.

“I’m out to do a quick walk around,” Mason said and got moving again.

I reached out and grabbed his arm. “That smart? Take two minutes and wait for me.”

He shrugged me off. “I’m good.”

Shit.

“Radio on!” I called out to him.

He lifted a hand in response, and I didn’t have the time to ask Briggs if he listened. He’d have the radio controls pulled up on another screen.

“How long since they’ve checked in?”

“Five minutes.”

We were constantly checking in. Half the time when we were on patrol we were having quiet conversations, shooting the shit about sports so we always knew we were okay.

“Five fucking minutes?” Blood raced through me, preparing me for a fight.

“Well yeah, now, but only three when I yelled for you. Would have interrupted immediately, but you sounded close.”
