“Mancussos,” I surmised.

How in the hell had they gotten back here?

“Fuck. We need to get Luca on the phone, figure out why he hasn’t been able to give us a heads-up. I mean, hell, if that was Daniel at that sex club, he’s been to New York and back, killed a man, and had eyes on Addi the entire time?”

Mason shrugged like this was any other Thursday. Hell, to him, it probably was, but I was so damn outside my element here I was floundering.

“No,” Mason said, and his head turned, catching Addi in the doorway to the kitchen, chewing on her bottom lip and looking at both of us expectantly. “You two need to pack and get the hell out of here. We’lltalk to Luca.”

“I’ll need men to follow us and watch for a tail.”

“We’ll get on it. How long until you two are ready?”

“I’m practically ready,” Addi stated. “My bags have pretty much been packed ever since you moved me in here, and I never got all my things from the apartment so it’ll take me less than ten minutes.” She stepped up to me and slid her hand through the crook of my arm. My other hand covered hers, needing the feel of her. And it did the trick. My skin on hers settled my racing heart, and I rolled my shoulders back.

I might have been out of my element, but I was ready for war, however and whenever that came to us. I had no doubt a battle was on the horizon and Addi and I were at the center of it.

Mason nodded. “Then we’ll go as soon as I secure travel arrangements.”

Let the battle begin.

Addi

“Hey Mom.”

“Oh Adrianna.” My name rolled off her tongue on a wobble, followed by a sharp inhale as she tried to settle herself.

As for me, I had no idea how to feel. This was a man who’d allowed andpushedme to marry a monster. He was certainly not the kind of father I’d wished for, though that was the end of our relationship. But…dead?

I still couldn’t wrap my head around it.

“How are you doing?”

My mom cried softly. “I just…I don’t know. I don’t know how I’m doing or what’s going on, or what’s been going on.”

“I know.” My mom had given me the final encouragement to run. Like my father, she’d often been cold and distant, but with that one small move the day I was facing my future’s ruination, she had helped.

“He wasn’t the man I married. Not at the end, and I just…I don’t know how to feel about that.”

Respect rose and drifted like a slow wave toward shore. She’d told me to run because I was in trouble, because she didn’t want me getting hurt.

I guess I hadn’t fully realized her awareness or her displeasure, either.

“I’m sorry, Mom.”

“Yeah.” She choked the word out then cleared her throat. “How are you? Are you…okay? Because I’ve been worried, and there are all these men here all the time…”

She must have meant Bull or Maxim, the guys from Jaxon’s office who were keeping an eye on her.

“I am. I’m safe for now. We’re still looking for Daniel. You haven’t heard from him, have you? Or his mom?” It was a shot in the dark, but I had to risk it. I headed toward the bathroom to grab my toiletries and makeup, the few things that had been brought over and that I had fully unpacked.

Shawn hadn’t packed yet, but I figured it’d take him minutes. He was still downstairs with Mason.

“No. No, I haven’t heard from anyone. Definitely not them.”

Her voice was steady, almost disappointed, like she wanted to have been contacted, wanted to be able to help me. The fact that she hadn’t gave me hope that Jaxon and Shawn’s idea that she might be used to lure me out was wrong. If they hadn’t gone after her yet, why would they now when Daniel obviously knew where I was? A tremble rolled down my spine and I hurried to the windows, yanking the curtains closed.
