“Not important? You tookoff on us when you know how dangerous it is out here foryou.”
“That’s it, I now knowthose bullets weren’t for me or Ray,” Ghost explained.
Gunner looked over.“Explain.”
“I overheard the vet andsome guy named Jackson discussing the shooting at thegraveyard.”
“What?” Fletcherasked.
“Yeah. The vet was pissedat the other guy for shooting at us. Said he didn’t call him tokill us and that this other guy was going to ruin everything, amongother things, like killing the entire team and shit. Apparently, the vet called Jackson and told him that we were snooping aroundthat day. He caught me and Ray at the barn.”
“Shit. Get Brick on theline. We’ve got a problem,” Gunner ordered. “Good job, kid.”
Ghost was bouncing in his seat withhappiness. He’d used his ability to get a crack in thecase.
“Stop bouncing your nakedass on my seat cushions,” Gunner growled.
Nice to know things neverchanged.
CHAPTER NINE
Ray
“The Berrys? Why would theBerry family be involved in this?” Ray asked as he put his cellphone on speaker.
“Yep, according to thelicense plate Ghost was able to get before this Jackson guy tookoff, it belongs to Joe Berry,” Brick said. “And Mr. Cross mentionedthe guy’s parents and grandparents.”
“That’s where the vet saidhe was coming from when he walked into that old barn that used tobelong to the Miles family,” Ray said.
“And now it belongs to theBerry family. Coincidence? I doubt it,” Fletcher said.
“There are nocoincidences,” Brick said. “Just clues.”
“I remember the Berryfamily from when I lived in Marshall,” Ray said. “Grandpa and Dadwere acting sheriff then. They kept to themselves pretty much. There were four boys and one daughter. Joe Berry is one of the foursons. He must have inherited the farm when his parents passed, butI don’t know who this Jackson is.”
“There’ll be some files onthe family in the town records, and if we’re lucky, one of theboxes from the station or one Sophia had saved,” Eliassaid.
“By the looks of things, the Berry family bought up all the Miles land after Jericho’sdeath. His parents moved into a small house in town after that. Iguess the old man didn’t want anything to do with the farm afterhis only son died,” Spencer said.
“So why would the Berryswant us to stop looking for answers to the shooting and hisrelationship with Sophia?” Ghost asked.
“That’s what we need tofind out,” Brick said. “The Berry family has now rocketedthemselves to the top of the list of suspects in thiscase.”
“Good job, Ghost,” Raysaid, meaning every word. He was surprised by how much he missedthe man. “We wouldn’t have a clue if you hadn’t ghosted andoverheard their conversation.”
Someone knocked on his hotel roomdoor, and Ray stood to answer it. When he opened the door, Owenspushed his way in, a bottle of whiskey in his hand.
“You ready to fuck,Sommers?” Owens slurred. “Take your clothes off, you old horndog. It's time we get reacquainted.”
What the fuck?Ray’s panicked gaze went to the phone. What thehell was Ghost thinking right now? God, Owens was such aprick.
“Um, we’ll leave you toyour conference, Ray. We can discuss this development in the casewhen you get back,” Brick said over the speaker, and the line wentdead.
“Fuck. Owens, what the helldid you just do?”
