"Okay, it's official," I said. "Karma hates me."
"She must not hate you too much," Hayden said. "You are stuck in here with me. And I'm a total catch."
Yeah, one that thought weddings were dumb and who already knew a bunch of embarrassing personal details he shouldn't know about me.
Ugh.
CHAPTER 4
A loud roar filled the space, and I felt my cheeks flush hot.
"What was that?" Hayden asked, looking around.
I shook my head. "I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't hear anything."
A few moments ticked by. I thought I was in the clear—but then my stomach growled again, and this time his eyes landed right on me.
"Is that…you?" he asked.
As if in answer, my tummy rumbled, loud as a train, nothing delicate or dainty about it. There was no denying it now. The space was too small to hide. The sound came again, and I huffed.
"Okay, okay," I said. "Yes, it's me. Sorry for disturbing the peace."
Hayden looked amused. "Oh, thank God. I thought it was the elevator. At least we're not going down."
"Very funny."
"Does it always sound like that?"
"No, it doesn't." I crossed my arms over my abdomen. "But we've been in here going on two hours. I haven't eaten anything since lunch, and I'm starting to get hungry."
Hayden nodded then gestured to my purse. "Do you have anything in there that might help?"
I shifted uncomfortably. Yes, I had a granola bar in my purse. I also had a small pack of nuts, carrots, a bottle of water, and some Sour Patch Kids. But I was reluctant to bring out my snacks.
My stomach clenched, and I finally gave in.
"I have a few things," I mumbled, dumping the edible contents onto the floor between us. "You can have some if you want."
Hayden's eyes widened as they landed on the food.
"Jeez, Maggie," he said. "You've been holding out on me."
I shrugged.
"If you had all this, why didn't you just eat?"
"It's complicated," I said.
Hayden stopped in the middle of reaching for the granola bar. "In what way?"
I bit my lip, and he leaned back.
"It's fine if you don't want to share," he added. "I'm not that hungry anyway."
"It's not that."
"Then…?"
