“I’ll text you,” he said once he was standing again.

“I’ll be waiting.”

Then, he opened the door for me and waited for me to check to see if the coast was clear. When it was, we both walked back to the party just in time to be called to dinner.

Keeping our relationship from my friends wasn’t really the plan, but that’s what ended up happening. When I said we should keep our relationship a secret, I’d truly only meant from her parents. And from the people I worked with. And I guess also my friends if I was being honest. It’s not that I didn’t think I could trust them with keeping our secret, but the more people who know, the more mouths there are to let it slip.

It had been three weeks since the luncheon at her parents house and the weather was starting to look more and more like spring. February was a big month for business due to the various festivals and expositions that were hosted throughout the city. Even with both the personal and business security branches of Sweetgrass Security booming, I still tried to see her whenever I could and we texted almost daily.

The handmade, Italian leather loafers I’d picked out before leaving my house this morning echoed through the open concept building as I made my way to my office. It was still early, so I was the only person in. The various desks and tables sat expectantly, waiting for my employees to come into work for the day. Standing in my closet this morning, I’d picked out my favorite deep navy suit that had been fitted at Berlin’s and paired it with a crisp white shirt and matching navy tie. I never expected my employees to be as formal as I was in the office but as the CEO, I always preferred to be overdressed than under. My nose was in my phone, replying to emails from various clients and business associates when it buzzed in my hand with a new message from the group chat I had with my friends.

1 New Message: Dungeons and Dickheads

Malcolm:

Sup dickwipes. We all still good for games tonight?

Hank:

Am I in some parallel universe? Shouldn’t it be Conrad asking this question?

Conrad:

I’m glad to see you’ve finally started caring about punctuality and respecting a schedule Malcom.

I’m still good for tonight if everyone else is.

I couldn’t believe it was already Wednesday and my friends would all be at my house again for another round of our favorite game. The days either seemed to fly by or drag on forever. When I was with Magnolia, hours felt like seconds, but without her they felt like years.

Conrad:

I’ll see you all tonight at 7:30.

Hank:

Bailey will be with me as she’s staying at my place for the week. I invited her to stay with me as a test drive to see how it would feel if we actually lived together.

Malcolm:

Test drive my ass, Hank. We all know you’re going to ask her to move in with you.

Hank:

Your ass is my favorite kind of ride

Hank:

She sees it as a test drive, I see it as a glimpse into our future. I’m going to ask her to move in with me after I propose next month.

Which reminds me, you all need to clear the last weekend of March because that’s when I’m going to ask her and you all need to be there.

You got it brother. I wouldn’t miss it.

Our group chat continued to explode with texts as I walked into my office, letting the large glass doors close softly behind me. I was logging into my computer to start my day when my phone lit up with a notification of another text.
