A dark shiver moved through me at his words.

“Yeah,” I answered breathlessly.

He shot me one last look and climbed out of the car.

I climbed out, too, and met him at the hood. There was a lightness in my heart after telling him what I did.

I always thought people would run once they knew, but Kai wasn’t running away.

No, he was holding onto me tightly with both hands.

He led me inside the busy bar.

I blinked and searched for any familiar faces.

I saw Dominic in the back with a woman on his lap, with dark-brown hair and pale skin. She was pretty in a girl-next-door kind of way, and I imagined she was probably just as sweet as she looked. She seemed so tiny on Dominic’s lap. I wondered how she could be close to the man and not feel… swallowed up.

Dominic was larger than life. Sitting in the center of the group, like a king on his throne.

Kai was just as big as his dad, but he had one inch on Dominic in height. I wondered if I looked odd standing next to Kai as well. I frowned at the thought and shook it away. Roman was there, with Ryleigh sitting close to him. I recognized the beautiful woman right away. She hadn’t changed much since she was young. If anything, she seemed to have grown more into her features, with her black-midnight hair parted in the middle and her big eyes standing against her golden skin tone.

Next to these two women, I wondered if I would come across as… lacking.

I shifted a little on my feet.

Next to Ryleigh was Roman.

His gaze was focused on Ryleigh. I had never seen anyone look at another person so intensely.

I blushed at it, feeling like I was intruding on a private moment.

Kai came up to me from behind and wrapped his arms around my waist. He rested his chin on the top of my head. “All right?”

I nodded, softly patting his forearm with the feather tattoo, letting my fingers drift gently up and down the ink.

He tightened his arms around me, making the noise in this bar not feel so overwhelming.

“Yeah,” I said, leaning back against him. “I’m doing fine.”

My eyes moved to Micah. He was the only single man of the trio. Even surrounded by his friends and club brothers, he seemed so detached from everything and everyone else.

I started to sympathize with him. And that was a dangerous thing, to sympathize with the man everyone referred to as a psycho.

I swallowed when he turned those silver eyes my way, a slight chill overtaking me.

Kai kissed the top of my head. “Don’t worry too much about Micah. He’s…harmless.”

He almost choked on the last word.

I didn’t bother to say otherwise. I didn’t believe him, but I believed Kai wouldn’t let anything happen to me.

I was safe with him.

I turned my head and smiled at him.

His eyes flashed darkly. “Fuck, are you sure it’s not too late to bring you back home?”

I laughed, my eyes catching Dominic’s from across the room briefly before I turned them back to Kai.
