“Trust me, it’ll be fun.”
I fold my arms. “Last time I checked, fun didn’t include falling on your head.”
“I’m not gonna drop you, Cupcake.” He glares at me incredulously. “I lift two of you before breakfast.” I shake out my arms to expel the nerves. He’s only a few yards away, and the fall probably wouldn’t hurt too bad.“I’m not gonna drop you!” he repeats with a laugh, practically reading my mind.
“Ugh, fine,” I huff, unable to back down. I dig my blades in the ice and push off, skating towards him, careful not to go too fast in case he does, in fact, drop me.
The slower I go, the less it’ll hurt.
I bend my knees on approach, ready to jump and—I’m gonna break my neck—slam directly into Porter’s chest, taking him with me to the ice. We slide across the cool surface, his arms holding my waist as we come to a stop.
“Damn,” Porter groans. “I said jump into my arms, not tackle me like you’re at football tryouts.”
I leave my face buried in his chest to allow myself a breath of relief we’re both not dead. And maybe also to hide some of the embarrassment as a chill sets into my bones so close to the ice. My adrenaline is so high I can almost ignore the fact I’m lying directly on top of one of the finest men I’ve ever met.
Glancing up, our eyes connect, and I fight a smile, setting my chin on his chest. “Did I make the team?”
“That depends. Are you alright?” he asks.
“Yes, but my ego may be bruised,” I say with a cheeky grin.
“I told you to trust me,” he says, brushing a strand of hair out of my face. “This only works if you trust me.”
I clear my throat, pushing off him. “Alright. Then let’s try again.”
“What?” he scoffs, standing to join me.
“Mama didn’t raise no quitter,” I say, skating back to my starting position. “Let’s do this.”
I spin to face him, and he’s staring at me with an expression I can’t quite decipher. He looks… happy? Not a Porter face I’m familiar with.
“Okay,” he says, preparing for take two. “Hit me.”
