At all the pain in my life.
Most of all at my damn self.
I exhale heavily, and he continues, “You have to focus the next few weeks and pass your finals. If you need to skip a practice or two, let me know. We’ll make it work. Alright?”
“I’ll do my best, Coach. I promise.”

How the hell am I supposed to focus when Seth and Sophia’s conversation has been on repeat in my mind all weekend?
If you really know what you did was wrong, then let’s go to the police.
I want to ask her what the fuck’s going on, but part of me is scared as hell to learn the truth. Terrified of how simple words could shatter the thin glass of our happy bubble.
Sophia is the brightest light in my life. Most days I push away the darkness, pretending it doesn’t exist, and being near her makes that exponentially easier.
What if she’s not the sunshine girl I thought she was?
What if she’s done something I can’t ever forget or forgive?
What if she was right?
What if her truth changes everything?
A flash of golden hair snaps me out of my thoughts as Sophia walks out of her last class of the day.
“Hey, Sunflower,” I say, getting her attention.
“Hey!” She beams and runs over to me, planting a rough kiss on my lips. My day instantly goes from pile of shit to pile of daisies. “How was practice?”
“It was fine,” I say, my throat tightening.
“What’s wrong?”
Just everything I’ve worked for is about to go up in flames.“Nothing, just a tough practice.” The last thing I need is Sophia worrying or thinking I’m an idiot.
“Okay… Wanna get something to eat?”
“Sure.” Another fake smile finds its way on my face. “Where does my girl want to go today?”
“Lazy Moon?”
“Yeah, that works.”

“Slow down, baby,” Elijah teases, letting out a warm laugh.
“I can’t,” I mumble between bites. “It’s the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted.Mmmmm.”
“You say that every time we come here.”
“And every time I mean it,” I say, spotting Desmond walking through the door, and I wave at him.
