“You alright, bro?”
The lie is on the tip of my tongue, but the whiskey replies differently. “No.”
“What’s up?”
We stand awkwardly in the center of the room, and I pull my eyes away, cracking my knuckles. “Just shit.”
“Come on, man. Talk to me.” The tenderness in his tone surprises me, and I pace, concentrating on the part of my freak-out he can understand.
“I’m just pissed… We’re playing in a bowl game, andof courseit’s against Sophia’s shithead ex.”
“I mean, yeah, that blows.” He waves me off. “But she’s totally stuck on your honey dick anyway. So who cares?”
“It’s not that.” I blow out a frustrated breath. “He’s just…” My stomach twists as I think about what he did. I wish I could talk about it with someone, but it’s not my secret to tell. “He’s just a shitty person, and I don’t want him anywhere near Sophia.”
“We’ll all be there. Trust me, no one is getting near her. Besides, the stadium is massive. He won’t even know she’s there.”
I pause my pacing, looking toward him. “Therewillbe tons of people at the game.”
“Exactly.” He strides over, throwing an arm around my shoulder. “Now don’t give that limp dick anymore of your energy and focus on pollinating that sunflower of yours.” He winks.
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“I know. So stop moping in here like a little bitch and get back to that sexy ass girlfriend of yours.”
I glare directly into his eyes. “Call her sexy one more time. Idareyou.”
He laughs in my face, dragging me toward the door. Why the hell does that never work?
“Come on, let’s get a drink,” he says, leading me back to the kitchen.
We walk through the archway, halting at the sight of Andi sprawled out on the kitchen island in a skimpy elf outfit and Sophia’s face pressed into her bare stomach.
“Holy shit!” Theo howls, beating my chest as Sophia finishes her body shot.
Her eyes connect with mine, a slow, sensual smirk forming. She drags her tongue across her lip, licking some of the excess liquor off.
“Remember the mission,” Theo whispers in my ear as Sophia makes her way over to us. “Pollinate the sunflower.”
I laugh, shaking my head, and Theo goes to set up a body shot on Andi.
“You were gone forever.” Sophia pouts, throwing her arms around my neck. “I missed you.”
She kisses me passionately, the taste of tequila on her tongue. “Whoa there.” I pull back, smiling down at her. “You good?”
“Pot, kettle.”
“Okay, touché.”
I wrap my arms around her waist, pulling her close, and she stands on her tiptoes to whisper in my ear. “Remember that thing you said about sneaking away and fucking while all our friends wonder where we are?”
Now that would be a nice distraction.
My dick hardens at the thought. “Mm-hmm.”
“Is that what you were doing with Theo?”
“What?!” I burst into laughter.
