“So, let me get this straight.”

Here we go.

“You left Hanover because you couldn’t get over the hot girl that did you wrong. So you move here, where the average woman’s age is seventy-two, just to have another hot piece of ass put you under her spell. Is there something wrong with you?”

“Shut up.” I’ve considered this fact. There might, actually, be something wrong with me.

“So, what’s wrong with her?”

“Who?”

“The girl who has her ‘mojo’ on you.” Zach uses his fingers to make air quotes around mojo.

“Nothing’s wrong with her.”

“Then why aren’t you hitting that?”

“Well, she’s not the kind of girl you hit and quit.”

“You fell for a church girl?”

“What? No. Nothing like that. It’s more that if I’m this fixated on her now, how am I going to walk away once I’ve fucked her. She’s got mad voodoo, man.”

“Who knows, maybe she’ll be bad in bed. Then you can move on,” Zach says, casting his line across the water’s expanse. The lure barely makes a sound as it connects with the lake below.

“Anyone in bed beats what I’ve had lately. Hell, Ashley just laid there, and it was enough. This girl gets me all wound up, and I haven’t seen her with her clothes off. I’m not sure I could put out the fire that one would start.”

“Hey, you got one,” he yells, pointing to my line. Even Otis lifts his head to check things out.

I start to pull and tug with force, hoping this one doesn’t turn out like our last outing and come out the size of a Ritz cracker. “Shit, I’m barely bringing it in.” I huff as I continue fighting to turn the reel.

“I’d think it was going to be a big one, but I recall-”

“Holy shit!” I bellow feeling proud.

“That’s a beauty. A far cry from his little sister you caught last time.”Not bad.Zach continues as I take care of the fish and prepare my line again. “Well, I say go for it. Life’s short.”

Staring at him, I’m speechless. This self-proclaimed bachelor isn’t the type to encourage a relationship with any woman.

“Yeah, yeah. Not for me, for you. I’ve been there, done that. I don’t need any more drama in my life. But I have no problem walking away from a good piece of ass because I know better. But you’re young and have a better chance at a decent future.” He reels his line in before recasting in a different direction, an almost pained look on his face. “This life ain’t for everyone.”

“I don’t know. This could be opening a big can of worms with this girl. It feels like she has a bigger pull on me than Ashley did.” But I have to face it. I probably need to take a chance. Or being around her might drive me insane. “At least there’s one good thing.”

“What’s that?”

“At least she’s not another model. I won’t have to see her face plastered everywhere if it doesn’t work out.”

CHAPTER15

Trevor

“Trevor Laurence. It’s about time you called your mother. It’s been over a week,” Mom chastises before bothering to say hello.

“I know, Mom. I’m sorry. I’ll do better. Are you doing okay? Noah said you had a doctor’s appointment. What’s that about?”

“It’s nothing. Just routine testing for old people. I’m fine. When are you coming home for a visit?”

“I’d been planning to come this past weekend, but Zach came, and we went fishing. It was good to see someone from back home. As soon as I have another three-day break, I’ll come. I promise.”
