She nods. “Okay.”
Chapter Seventeen
Bexley
Five days missing
The wind howls outside the windows, and every now and again I can feel a mouse run across my shoe. The first time made me scream, and I nearly flipped over, but thankfully, I caught myself. The thought of my face being on that floor scares me more than the darkness surrounding us.
Danny and I make small talk, and he tries to make me laugh, which is odd. He never was a big jokester, well, not really. There was a time or two he was pretty clever, even if his puns weren’t a laughing matter. Danny always made light of the shit he did. He acted as if hisjobwas just as normal as a man going to clock in at the factory or something.
I don’t think he ever fully understood how much it bothered me. How heavy it weighed on my chest—that the man I loved was a criminal.
“Got it,” he says.
“Got what?” I ask, looking around and seeing nothing but this damn blindfold.
“My blindfold.”
“Oh good! Can you see where we are? Good God, I’m so glad one of us can actually fucking see. How did you get the thing loose with no…?”
“Holy fuck,” he says on a whisper.
“What?” I ask, panicky at the seriousness of his tone. “Danny, what is it?”
“We look like shit,” he says playfully, but I can still hear that hint of worry in his voice.
“Really?” I scoff. “I thought I’d look good after being kidnapped, drugged, starved, and tied to a chair for days.”
“Yeah, well, you look worse than me,” he says.
I roll my eyes, hoping that’s not true, but also hoping it is. I worry about his injuries. I can’t see them, and it’s driving me insane. Shit, even if I could, there isn’t a damn thing I could do. I’m no doctor, and I’m sure wherever we are doesn’t have a first-aid kit.
“Where are we?” I ask.
“A cabin. It’s old. And from the looks of it, it seems like we’re way the hell out here.”
“Out where?” I ask.
“I have no idea, Bexley. I was just as unconscious as you were when we arrived.”
“Don’t be a smartass, Danny. I just want answers. I’m the one who still can’t see.”
A truck pulls up in the front. “Oh, shit. What will he do knowing your blindfold is off?”
“We’ll have to see, won’t we?”
Terror fills my veins, sending my heart nearly into cardiac arrest. I can’t imagine being out here without him. His attitude could get him killed.
“Danny, please don’t instigate anything with him. Please.”
“Don’t worry, Little Girl. I won’t leave you.”
I don’t reply as the door opens and I hear boots.
“Now I get to see what all the fuss is about,” Danny says.
Fuck.
