Not that thinking of areleaseor anything even remotely sexual while Craig was still inches away from her was helping the situation at the moment.

It most certainly was not.

She left her tea on the counter and started to gather things for Meri’s school snack.

“Speaking of your job…”

She spun around. “Is everything okay?”

“Oh. Of course.” Craig held up his hand. “You’re doing a great job. I just said so, remember? It’s just that there was something I needed to talk to you about.”

Something in his tone stilled her. “Anything bad?”

“Oh no.” He shook his head and took a sip of his coffee. His eyes danced around, and he wouldn’t meet her gaze.

“Craig?”

“Honestly.” He looked up then. “You’re doing great, really. Meri loves you.”

She nodded.

“It’s just…” Again, he looked down and stumbled over his words. “It’s been a week and today is Friday.”

“All day.” She narrowed her eyes and took a breath in. If Craig had been any other guy, she would have sworn he was about to ask her out on a date. Which was crazy, because he was her boss, a fact she was continually trying to remind herself of. But there was no way he would?—

“I was wondering if?—”

“I have a date.” She blurted out the words, and Craig looked up, confused.

“A date?”

Lucy nodded but didn’t offer any more information.

“Oh,” he said after a moment. “Okay. Yeah. That makes sense.”

But it didn’t make sense, because he ran his hand through his hair and turned away, and the moment he did, Lucy had the realization that he wasn’t going to ask her out after all.

Her face flushed a hot red, and she was thankful he couldn’t see her embarrassment because in an instant, she’d made everything painfully awkwardandshe’d lied to her new boss.

Lucy was going on a date.Of course she was. She was a smart, attractive young woman with a brilliant smile and killer personality.

It made sense that she was going on a date.

But with who?

It was thewhothat had been driving Craig crazy all day long. Who had managed to capture her attention? What was he like? Was he good enough for her? Would he treat her right?

And why did he care?

“What do you think of that one?”

Craig looked up from the plate of chocolate confections Chase had put in front of him and stared at his big brother blankly.

“Well?”

“Well, what?”
