“Well, I think they’re cute.” Her friend grinned and turned as something—orsomeone—caught his eye.
Charlotte Davis.
“I bet that’s not all you think is cute,” she teased and elbowed her friend in the ribs.
“What?”
“Don’t pretend you don’t.”
She narrowed her gaze at him, and Nick laughed. “Okay, I won’t. I do think she’s cute and…interesting.”
“Interesting?”
He shrugged and turned back to Steph. “Every time I talk to her, I learn a little more, and I like what I’m learning. There’s more to her than what’s happened to her.”
Steph sighed. “You know that’s true of most people, right?”
Nick laughed. “Maybe so. But I’m not talking aboutmost people.”
“Clearly.” She rolled her eyes. “So tell me something about Charlotte that you find so interesting.” Steph couldn’t help but egg him on a little. It wouldn’t be the worst thing for him to have someone in his life.
“Did you know she’s an interior designer?”
Steph shook her head; she did not know that.
“It’s true. And a pretty talented one, too. Well, before she went out East anyway. But…hey! Maybe she could help you with your cabins?”
It wasn’t a bad idea. Steph knew what she wanted—she just didn’t knowhowto put it all together. “That could be a thing,” she said. “I’ll talk to her.”
“Do you want to talk now? I’ll go introduce you.”
“Down, boy.” Steph laughed again. “Besides, we’ve met, remember? Don’t worry, I’ll reach out to her and see if she has any—” Her thoughts flew from her head when her eyes landed on Travis Bishop. What was he doing there?
Before she could change her expression, Nick turned to see what or who she was looking at. When he turned around again, he let out a low whistle, but Steph only half noticed. She was too fixated on Travis, who looked annoyingly sexy in a clean button-down shirt, jeans that looked a little less worn-out than his usual pair, and remarkably clean, shiny black cowboy boots.
He cleaned up well.
She both hated and loved the fact that she’d even noticed.
And then he turned, his dark eyes landing on her, and a shock flew through her body.
Damn him and his effect on her.
“Maybe I’m not the only one who’s found someone interesting in Glacier Falls.”
Nick’s teasing tone pulled Steph back into the moment. She shook her head hard and forced herself to look away from Travis. “Hardly. I’ve already told you, he’s working on my cabins. That’s it.”
That wasn’t it. Far from it. They’d almost—what? Kissed?Almost. And almost didn’t count. Not that she wanted it to.
Did she?
Ugh.
Something about Travis Bishop set her on edge, and not in an entirely good way. He left her feeling unsettled and unsure. And Steph never felt that way.
She hadn’t spoken to him or seen him since that day at Lynx Creek. They’d communicated by text messages and email only. The few times he had tried to call, she’d sent the call to voicemail. It was for the best. Something about his voice made her stomach flip and then she couldn’t think properly and everything got all mixed up inside…
“Travis Bishop?” She tried to laugh, hoping it came off casually. “I don’t think so. I mean, seriously…” Her protests didn’t sound convincing even to her own ears, and judging by the look on Nick’s face, he wasn’t buying it either. Steph exhaled hard. “He’s not even remotely my type. In fact, I don’t want anything to do with Travis at all.”
