“The memory of that night”—his voice cracks, like shards of glass crunching beneath a heavy boot—“got me through some hard times.”
“Yeah, well, it created some for me.”
Spencer spins me around, crushing my naked breasts against his chest. Gentle hands slide over my jaw to cup my cheeks. “I’m so damn sorry.” His eyes flit between mine. “I’d go back in a heartbeat if I could to stop myself from hurting you.”
Everything from his posture to his eyes to his tone screams sincerity.
“I forgive you.”
“You do?”
“I do.” I glide my hands slowly up his arms. His thick wrists are nearly too much for me to grip, but I manage to wrap my fingers around them.
“How come?”
“All I needed was an apology. It’s been too long to keep holding a grudge. Plus, the sex was good.”
“Back then or now?”
“Are you searching for an ego boost, Spencer?”
“Doesn’t hurt to hear you say it.”
Still holding his wrists, I walk him a few steps backward. His desire for praise has him trusting me a little too much for my devious intentions.
“Oh, I said it. I believe I said it about four times while I was coming.”
“Five.” Spencer’s lips quirk in a half grin.
“I think there’s just one more thing I need to truly put this in our past.”
“What’s that?”
“This!”
With an almighty shove, I thrust him by his wrists into the infinity pool. I laugh for half a second before my plan backfires.
He manages to grab my forearm, and he drags me naked into the pool with him.
Saltwater rushes to greet me. I pinch the end of my nose as my head slips beneath the water. My foot connects with the bottom, propelling me to the surface with a gasp.
Water drips into my eyes. I swipe hastily, but Spencer anchors me tightly against his chest before I can clear it.
“You good?”
I try to push him back beneath the surface, but he’s too strong. His laughter rings out in the night.
“I’m justfine,thank you,” I sputter.
The droplets blur my vision, but even through the haze, Spencer’s smile is visible. The right side is puckered slightly by his scars but no less attractive, and his blue eyes shimmer beneath the moon.
“Things were getting a little heated, anyway.” His lips seek out the curve of my neck.
I roll my head until all I can see are the twinkling stars overhead. “Spencer.”
His palms skate across my thighs beneath the water. He lifts them one at a time and secures them around his hips. I don’t even notice we’re moving until my back presses against the glass wall of the pool overlooking the greenery below our villa.
“Can’t get enough of you, Cortney.”
