That evening,I attended Tucker’s autopsy, and then stayed late at the office. Gen’s contact info on my personal cell taunted me.

I’d decided not to write her first, not unless I had something new to share about the investigation or her safety. I’d already thrown myself at the woman. Practically begged her to take me to her bed. I did havesomepride left.

Instead, I messaged on an encrypted app with Aiden, Trace, and River while I studied my investigation notes on my whiteboard.

Trace:

I’m about to go meet with your girl, Owen.

Not my girl.

Trace:

Jessi and Scarlett told her about the real purpose ofLast Refuge.

And?

Trace:

Your girl swears she’d never endanger anyone here.

Aiden:

You’re sure we can trust her, O? You didn’t have good things to say about this woman before.

River:

That was before he knew what she looked like. Seems the sheriff prefers blonds. [eyes emoji]

I trust her enough for now. I wasn’t sufficiently informed when I spoke about her before.

And that is NOT because of what she looks like.

River:

[heart eyes emoji]

I swear, Riv, if I see another stupid emoji I’m starting a new Protectors thread that doesn’t have you on it. I’m not in the mood.

Trace:

Don’t poke him, O. Not worth it. Riv could take over all our devices and change the language to Cantonese. He’s done it.

River:

oh you’re right I forgot about that! [crying laughing emoji]

“True professionals,” I muttered.

My buddy Dean would fit right in with them. But he was happy bartending and snowboarding, and he’d left his warrior history long in the past. I understood his reasons. But it was too bad. He’d been a good Marine, and we neededmore people. Three real Protectors plus me weren’t nearly enough.

If I could’ve had my way, a full platoon of Marines would be protecting Genevieve right now. I wished I could handle it myself, but I had my duties as sheriff. That…and the fact that I lost all willpower around her.

Just make sure Gen is safe. Who’s on duty at Last Refuge tonight?

Trace:

The three of us. Don’t worry, O. We’ve got it covered.
