Happily, I thought, longing to link my fingers through hers. But I knew better than to tempt fate. “We’ll use the back exit,” I said. “It’s just down the hall.”

Kayla

I didn’t askhow he knew about the back exit. Nor did I hesitate when he boldly stepped into the hallway. I just left a moment after him, turned right instead of left, and followed him out the door.

Then I continued trailing after him outside to the parking garage and up the stairwell to the third level. No one paid us any attention. And thankfully, I didn’t see anyone I knew along the way.

When he stopped beside a sporty black two-seater, I didn’t take a moment to admire the brand, just slid into the passenger bucket seat up front and pulled the phone from my cleavage to shoot a text to Nikki.

Heading out. See you tomorrow. xx.

I turned off my phone before she could reply or call me to demand answers. Then I set it in the cupholder of Maddox’s car to deal with later.

Oh, there’d be hell to pay tomorrow, but I didn’t care. I would just say I went back to my parents’ house after running into Chase on the dance floor. That’d silence her pestering. She’d assume I broke down and ran.

Which I’d been about to do until Professor Kane had wrapped me up in his arms.

Now my stomach twisted for an entirely different reason.

His spicy scent surrounded me as he buckled himself into the driver’s seat, his masculine hand settling on the shifter between us. Because of course the car had a manual transmission. I glanced at the familiar logo on the steering wheel, noting the notorious German manufacturer symbol.

Audi.

“I assume you’re not drunk, Professor.” It was a bit late to be questioning his sobriety. And if I were honest, I was just looking for something to say to distract myself from his intoxicating presence.

“Didn’t even finish my second beer,” he replied as he reversed out of his spot. “And even if that weren’t the case, I’d never let you drive my car. We’d call for a ride.”

“Probably a good idea. I have no idea how to drive stick.”

He glanced at me. “Something tells me you’d be a natural.”

I grinned. “I absolutely would be.”

“Now who’s arrogant?”

“At least I didn’t claim to be the best fuck of your life.”

“Maybe you are.”

“Don’t disrespect me with false compliments, Professor. I’m aware of your track record.” Mostly because of Nikki’s obsession with gossip magazines. She’d practically tripped over her heels when she saw Dustin McCoy sitting with Professor Kane at the bar. “Won’t your friend wonder where you went?” I pondered out loud.

“I’ll text him when we get back to my place. He’ll be fine on his own.”

I considered that and frowned. “I don’t know about that. Nikki’s going to proposition him.”

Professor Kane chuckled. “Trust me. He can handle Miss Anderson. She’s harmless.”

“Then you don’t know Nikki very well.”

“And you don’t know Dustin.”

I lifted a shoulder. “Fair.” It wasn’t something I wanted to argue anyway. If he thought his friend could handle my sorority sister, then I’d go along with the belief. “I turned off my phone, so she’s probably busy freaking out about my text right now anyway.”

“What’d you tell her?”

“That I was heading out and would see her tomorrow.” I studied his profile as he pulled out of the garage and onto the street. “Why? Worried I mentioned you?”

“I know you wouldn’t.”
