“Don’t fucking hurt her,” I whispered, a slight tremble entering into my voice.
The woman in the chair… Alaska Zacharra, set upright, and her eyes were so sharp, they seemed eagle like. Her attire looked expensive, a black pant suit, with a rich red lipstick coating her lips. Around her neck was the necklace she’d worn every day of my life, familiar and haunting.
It can’t be her,my Corsican stirred.
She’s dead,he whispered again.
My mother, maybe another double waved a gun before finally speaking. “Have some manners and close the door Augustus…”
No one ever called me Augustus, not even my father who I shared the name with. Only her.
My mother was fucking alive.
Slowly, I did as I was told but my eyes never left her, and she remained sitting still.
“Okay, I did what you wanted,” I motioned to the door. “Tell your goon to release her.”
My mother’s gaze drifted gradually to Xander who was sniffing Rain’s hair. Something told me he could smell the lingering musk of our stairwell fuck session.
That’s right motherfucker,I thought.Her pussy’s mine…
“Take care of that,” Alaska shrugged and then trained a gun on me.
“Wait, what!” I snapped moving to defend Rain.
In an instant, Rain slumped to the floor. Xander had stabbed her with something so fast I’d only blinked.
“She’s fine,” my mother rolled her eyes. “But she’s not who I’m here for.”
“Mom…I… I don’t understand…”
She stood then. “I’m all about choices, baby. It was a choice to marry your father so that he’d fund my genetic research. It was a choice to bear him five children. I’m going to give you a choice as well, son.”
Rain seemed to be breathing, I couldn’t look away from her. It wasn’t until Alaska stepped into my line of vision I refocused.
“Son…are you listening to me?”
I whipped up. “Rain…is she okay?”
Alaska shrugged and dragged my gaze to meet hers. Her scent surrounded me. So familiar and warm and with each breath I pulled into my lungs I wanted to be consumed. It wasn’t enough to stop the worry pitting itself in my stomach. “I’m giving you a choice, Augustus. Come with me now or die in this room, but not before you watch this little slut die from the poison pumping through her veins”
Red began to cloud my vision. My Corsican was ready to come out and play.
He began to speak through us. “You are playing a dangerous game, mother or not. She is mine in all the ways that matter…”
Alaska’s eyes brightened up and she raised her hand about to touch me, but I batted her hand away. “So it is true? you do have one…”
“Fuck you,” my Corsican roared his hand was around her throat quicker than a fox chasing a rabbit.
Alaska stared into our eyes, unphased by the fact that her feet were dangling off the ground. That our hand had encased her throat and all it would take was a little pressure to really end her fucking life.
“I have the antidote for the poison but I should warn you…she has maybe three minutes left, Augustus…make a choice, son.”
My eyes searched hers and I knew that she wasn’t lying. In fact, I had a feeling she’d love to study Rain’s death. Take notes, track how fast, whatever poison was in her veins was reacting.
“I…I’ll come with you…”
Alaska collapsed on the ground, and I realized that Xander had never made any movements towards me or my mother.
