“This week.” He kissed her forehead. “Then again in two weeks.” Another kiss. “I’m usually there a week out of the month…” He smoothed her hair, tucking the errant strands gently behind her ear.

Her muddled mind did the math. A work week with weekends on either side of it. Two weekends a month.

“Not bad, for a start,” Erik said. “I have a lot of frequent flyer miles. Maybe you could fly to Sweden in between, and—” He broke off and pulled back to check her reaction. “Is that okay?”

She stifled a squeak. “For a start.” She rested her head against his, forehead to forehead, and allowed those two long-waiting words to form once again. “Love you,” she whispered.

With her next breath, she just about inhaled his lips. His came to life, too, stirring over hers with that unbelievably soft touch. With it, the drone of the airplane faded away, replaced by the crackling of a fireplace in a familiar wood-side cabin.

Peaceful. Cozy. Secure.

They were home.
