How dare he break into her shop and then start destroying her stuff?
She got out of bed and slipped her feet into a pair of sandals laying on the floor by her closet. She opened her bedroom door and crossed the hall to Leni’s room to tell Dodge and Maisie what she’d seen.
But, as she approached the slightly open door, she heard Dodge’s steady snoring and Maisie’s even breathing. She peeked into Max’s room and the nursery, and both kids were sound asleep.
She could call the police. Or Mack. He would be in his truck and probably beat her to the coffee shop, even though her house was only a few minutes away.
No, she was sick of being afraid of Lyle Williams.
And she was going to tell him so.
She’d be there and back in ten minutes, she thought as she slipped out of the house and into her car. Plus, the coffee shop was on the main street of town, so there would be plenty of people around if Lyle tried anything.
All she wanted to do was march into the shop, hershop, and tell him to get the hell out of it. That it was hers until the paperwork went through.
She had a few other choice words to say to him, but those would suffice for now.
Some of her bravado faded as she pulled up in front of the shop and noticed the street was completely deserted. No cars. No people. No lights on in any of the businesses.
The diner, the Tipsy Pig, and the local bar, where the majority of the people would be, were all on the edge of town, closer to the highway.
Her bravado might have faded, but her anger hadn’t.
She got out of the car and faced the shop. Okay, she was pissed, but she wasn’t stupid.
And it wasn’t his shopyet.
She checked the app once more to confirm Lyle was still in the store, then tapped back to place a call to 9-1-1 to report a break-in.
Then she unlocked the front door to face The Little Turd.
The county sheriff’s office was located between Woodland Hills and the next town over of Creedence, so it should take them less than ten minutes to get to her.
Plenty of time for her to finally tell Lyle what she thought of him. And surely, he couldn’t do too much to her in that short amount of time.
Knowinghe wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway, Mack had taken Zeus on a long trail ride through the mountains above the ranch then spent a good hour brushing and grooming him before going back to the house and calling it a night.
Duke had already gone to bed by the time he made it inside, and Maisie had texted him thirty minutes ago to confirm they were sleeping over at Lorna’s and that everyone was tucked in for the night.
In his bedroom, he shucked off his clothes then checked his phone, just to make sure Lorna hadn’t tried to message him.
Nothing.
Angry, hurt, and frustrated, he took a long shower, running the water as hot as he could stand it, letting it wash over him until the spray turned cold. He dried off then pulled on a pair of sweats, thinking he might go into the kitchen to make a sandwich. If he wasn’t going to sleep, might as well eat.
His phone buzzed on his dresser, and he crossed the room, hoping it might be Lorna. But his heart leapt to his throat as he saw several notifications from the security camera app.
He opened the app and swore as he watched that bastard, Lyle, waltzing around Lorna’s shop like he already owned the place and making a mess as he knocked things around.
Screw that guy.
This felt like the opportunity he’d been waiting for to give that asshole a piece of his mind. And an even bigger piece of his fists.
He leaned down and grabbed his boots, pulling them on over his sweats, not wanting to take the time to change into jeans in case Lyle left the store and Mack missed his opportunity.
Still watching the screen, he walked to his closet to grab a shirt, but turned in his tracks and started running as he saw Lorna enter the shop and Lyle advance on her.
Mack swore again as that son-of-a-bitch took a swing that sent Lorna flying back into one of the tables.
